Israel ParaSport Center

Israel ParaSport Center At the Israel ParaSport Center, we harness the power of adaptive sports to transform lives.

Serving 3,000+ annually, we help Israelis with disabilities, assisting them in building the self-confidence and skills that empower a life without limit. The Israel ParaSport Center (formerly Israel Sport Center for the Disabled) is a world-renowned athletic rehabilitation center in Israel that transforms lives. Founded more than 60 years ago, The Center's mission to empower people with disabilities through sports has helped thousands of Israelis lead fulfilling, successful lives. The Israel ParaSport Center currently serves more than 2,700 children and adults with disabilities annually through both its holistic rehabilitative and competitive parasport programs. Children and adults with disabilities are unbound by societal expectations through Israel ParaSport Center programs. Everyone has the opportunity to participate in various adaptive sports; from wheelchair basketball and rugby to boccia and wheelchair table tennis, every athlete is empowered to meet and exceed their goals on and off the court. With the help of The Center's staff, they gain self-confidence, learn new skills, find community, and successfully integrate into Israeli society. The Israel ParaSport Center (formerly The American Friends of the Israel Sport Center for the Disabled) is a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) organization operating under Federal Tax ID #27-5126671.

Some nice news: wheelchair tennis player Guy Sasson, world #3 in quad singles, continues his impressive run on the international tour, winning the Rome 500 tournament in the U.S.

Along the way, Guy defeated world #7. In the finals against world #5, he showed great resilience, coming back from a difficult position to take the first set 7–5, before closing out the match with a dominant 6–0 second set to secure the title.

Go Guy!

Even someone like Asael—a strong athlete and fully capable—can suddenly find himself unable to reach shelter in time during missile attacks.

All of us in Israel are living a war routine: sirens, safe rooms, and trying to get through the day in between. People are exhausted, yet most are safely in a shelter or protected space before the booms begin.

Asael reminds us of all the people—some expected, some unexpected—who don’t make it to shelter before the buildings shake.

It's very clear that this war isn’t just about stopping a dangerous regime. It’s about progress versus the medieval, our values versus theirs. It's about creating a safe world for our children.

If we don’t ensure people with disabilities can reach a shelter in time, are we any different from the dark side which we're fighting?

Words from Paralympic medalist and Israel ParaSport Center executive director Boaz Kramer, written in June 2025, remain just as true today.

Pavel talks about our virtual exercise program — up and running within a day of the current escalation, born out of far too much experience with emergency situations. The program runs in collaboration with two other organizations, and classes have been popular from the start. It is clearly filling a need: providing structure, movement, and a sense of connection during long, tense, and uncertain days.

Wheelchair tennis player Sergei Lysov was supposed to be in the U.S. this week for two major tournaments, but with Israel’s airspace only just reopening, he’s at home running to and from the safe room.

Last month, Sergei competed at the ITF 500 in Rotterdam, one of the most prestigious events on the tour, featuring 12 of the world’s top players. He reached the quarterfinals against world #5 Gordon Reid (UK). Soon after, he played in Bolton, UK, advancing to the finals and finishing second after a strong match against world #2 from the Netherlands.

Missing tournaments is tough for ranking points and experience—but mostly we’re grateful our community is safe and that none of our athletes got stuck abroad this time around.

The Center is now slowly reopening in a highly controlled manner: only competitive athletes over 18 can train, and the total number of people at the center at any one time is restricted, which means Sergei and our other elite athletes can at least resume training.

Sergei was the first of our athletes whose flights were canceled; next was our wheelchair basketball team, who will be missing the European Cup quarterfinals.

Being an Israeli athlete on the international stage is often not easy. Federations don’t always understand the difficult decisions we face—or that are sometimes made for us.

We’ll continue to share updates on our athletes and community during these challenging times.

Living with a prosthetic leg in the middle of sirens means calculating everything.

Do I shower now, or wait for the next one? Do I sleep with my leg on tonight?

These are the questions is navigating right now — and he wanted to share what it looks like to be disabled during this crisis in Israel.

Last week, we celebrated Purim together — four parties across two days. This week, we are all home, close to our safe rooms, listening for sirens.

That is life in Israel. And yet our community holds together, as it's done for decades.

Coaches are on calls with their athletes. We're running popular online classes every day. Tal Cohen, head of the children's program, is on Zoom with the kids. Ayelet Avraham, head of social services, is checking in on everyone who might need a little extra support.

We are holding onto hope that our wheelchair tennis, para-table tennis, and wheelchair basketball athletes will still be able to travel abroad to compete internationally in the coming two weeks, as planned.

We're grateful that the renovation of the semi-Olympic pool is continuing even now, made possible by the shelters we installed after October 7th, 2023.

The Sport Center will reopen.

Meanwhile we hope and pray for our entire community to remain safe and we continue to be the community that shows up for one another through thick and thin.

Am Yisrael Chai. 🤍
