Lower back pain in golfers isn’t just bad luck, it’s often predictable when you look at the right metrics.

Here are 3 research-backed predictors we assess:

1️⃣ Lower BMI
Golfers with lower body mass may have less overall tissue capacity to handle the rotational and compressive demands of the swing—making the spine more vulnerable over time.

2️⃣ Restricted hip internal rotation (IR) ROM
The golf swing demands rotation. If you’re lacking hip IR, your body will borrow motion from the lumbar spine… a region that’s not built to rotate repeatedly under load.

3️⃣ Asymmetric muscular endurance
Side-to-side imbalances—especially in the core and hips—can lead to uneven force distribution throughout the swing, increasing stress on the low back.

Your body will always find a way to create motion… even if it means creating pain.
