Funeral Etiquette Isn’t About Rules. It’s About Care...

You don’t have to say the perfect thing.
You don’t need the right outfit, the right words, or the right timing.

What matters most is simply showing up.

A quiet hug. A shared memory. Sitting beside someone who feels alone. Signing the guest book. Sending a message weeks later when the flowers are gone.

Out-of-the-box truth: the greatest act of funeral etiquette is presence, not perfection.

If you’re unsure what to do, lead with kindness. It’s always enough.

Gratitude looks different for everyone, especially in times of loss.

It may be felt in a quiet moment of reflection, a handwritten note, a shared memory, or the simple presence of someone who shows up when it matters most. We are continually reminded how powerful gratitude can be, even during difficult seasons.

We are grateful for the families who place their trust in us, for the moments we are invited into, and for the opportunity to serve our community with care and compassion. Thank you for allowing us to walk alongside you.

If you find yourself in Houston, consider a visit to the National Museum of Funeral History like Mark & Nora did last week. It was a tasteful and well curated place to honor funeral directors’ service to our country over the years. The photos share a few highlights.

Some memories are meant to be kept close. Prayer cards provide a simple, meaningful way to hold onto a loved one’s presence wherever life may lead.

These are just a few of the thoughtful designs families have chosen to honor someone special.

Many people worry about funeral etiquette because they don’t want to do the wrong thing. A few simple reminders can help ease that uncertainty.

If you pass a funeral procession, pulling over and allowing it to pass is a quiet sign of respect. When attending services, wearing something modest and comfortable is always appropriate. It does not need to be formal or new. Signing the register book, even if you do not know what to say, helps families remember who took time to be there. A simple signature truly means more than words.

Funeral etiquette is not about rules. It is about kindness, respect, and showing care in small but meaningful ways.

The History of our building and our founders.

Nolan Funeral Home was founded in 1948 by James P. Nolan, Sr. and his wife Anne T. Nolan. Jim and Anne ventured to open their own Funeral Home in Northport. A new building was erected and opened for business in October, 1948. They steadily built their business through hard work, and a determined mind, to give families the best service possible. Business did so well that they added-on to the original building in 1958. A year later their eldest son Jim, Jr. began working at the Funeral Home full time, and was followed by his brother Peter in 1963. The building underwent another expansion in 1968, to how it stands today.

The first funeral home in the Village of Northport was S. Robbins Funeral Home. It opened and was run out of a furniture store in 1894. In 1935 S. Robbins and Son Funeral Home, run by Harry Taylor and Robert N. Davis, opened a new building at 81 Scudder Avenue in Northport. It was the first separate building used only as a Funeral Home in the Town of Huntington. Harry Taylor managed the funeral home, with his partner Robert N. Davis. In 1946 Harry Taylor bought out his partner and changed the name to Taylor Funeral Home. In November of 1963 Harold Howe, a Funeral Director from Freeport, moved to Northport and started working for Mr. Taylor. In June of 1968, Harold bought the business from Mr. Taylor and ran the business until 1981, when he merged with Nolan Funeral Home. On July 1, 1982 the Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home began its business at 5 Laurel Avenue.

In 2018, third-generation owner Mark J. Nolan succeeded his father Jim Jr. and uncle Peter Nolan and re-established Nolan Funeral Home, Inc. in Northport Village. Mark began his career at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, Inc. in 1996 and will continue to work with the dedicated staff, to bring superior funeral service to all.

The funeral home has three viewing rooms, that range in size to accommodate any and all needs. We have a separate children’s play room/lounge, and are handicapped accessible. We encourage anyone to stop in and tour our beautiful building. Please also visit us online at www.nolanfh.com to learn about our staff, services, local resources and more.
