Today is Gout Awareness Day. The difference between arthritis of the great toe joint and gout is where the bone destruction is occurring. If the joint space is preserved and there is punched out area of bone outside of the joint, then this can signify chronic gout.

It’s National Wear Red Day to raise awareness of heart disease. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death in women. I’m wearing red to raise awareness of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) which significantly increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. PAD is a disease in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the legs and feet. A simple PAD screening test in my office helps us identify those at risk and needing vascular intervention. Many people do not experience symptoms. But those who have symptoms may complain of leg cramps, burning painful toes, cold feet, loss of hair on legs or feet, slow healing sores or ulcers.
