One of the most common misconceptions I hear from patients and families is that hospice means “giving up.”

It doesn’t.

Hospice is a Medicare benefit that shifts the goal of care — from curing a disease to maximizing comfort and quality of life. Patients with a terminal prognosis of 6 months or less (if the disease runs its natural course) are eligible.
