“Love the good things and walk humbly with God.”

Father Vincent Thu Laing, a priest for the Diocese of Pathein – Myanmar, who served as a missionary priest in the Diocese of Salina, died on February 1, 2026, in Myanmar. He was born on October 12, 1955, in Myanmar (formerly Burma), into a Catholic farming family. The second of five children, Fr. Vincent grew up in a rural village of approximately 200 families. His community was predominantly Catholic, a rare blessing in a mostly Buddhist country. At the age of 11, Fr. Vincent left his village to continue his education at a boarding house, also known as a minor seminary. After completing high school, he attended college, where he studied mathematics. He later entered seminary, influenced by a prominent priest and guided by God’s persistent call. After six months, he knew he was called to the priesthood, attributing his vocation to a deep and lifelong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Fr. Vincent was ordained a priest on April 4, 1987, at the age of 32. Following his ordination, he served as a parish priest and later as secretary to his bishop. He was eventually appointed pastor of the cathedral. After the death of that bishop, a new bishop—now a cardinal—invited Fr. Vincent to serve in the United States. Though hesitant due to language, culture, and travel concerns, Fr. Vincent discerned God’s will and eventually accepted the invitation. Invited by Bishop George Fitzsimmons, Fr. Vincent became the first Burmese priest to serve in the Diocese of Salina. Originally intending to stay for three years, he remained for more than two decades, serving faithfully and gratefully among the people of western Kansas.

During his time in the Diocese of Salina, Fr. Vincent served at the following parishes:
St. John the Baptist, Beloit (1999)
St. Augustine, Washington and SS. Peter and Paul, Morrowville (2000–2002)
St. Francis of Assisi, Norton and St. Joseph, New Almelo (2002–2015)
St. Francis Cabrini, Hoxie and St. Martin of Tours, Seguin (2015–2025)

Upon arriving in the United States, Fr. Vincent spent time in Independence, Kansas, where he studied English at a community college and learned to drive. He immersed himself in the language by watching television and listening to the radio. After one month in Independence, he was assigned to St. John the Baptist Parish, Beloit, where he served alongside Father Henry Baxa. Beloit became his “first love” in the Diocese of Salina, a place where he found great joy and happiness. Father Baxa often teased him for reading comic strips as a way to learn English—especially his favorite, Pickles.

Fr. Vincent’s priestly motto was drawn from the prophet Micah, who says, “Love the good things and walk humbly with God.” Fr. Vincent was deeply grateful to the American Church and the Diocese of Salina, often expressing thanks for being welcomed and treated as family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 4, at St. Mary Church in Marygone Village, Myanmar. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, at St. Francis Cabrini Parish in Hoxie.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. Please continue to pray for Fr. Vincent and for his family.

Elvin Edgett

Lloyd “Elvin” Edgett, 80, of Norton, Kansas passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, WaKeeney, Kansas, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Elvin was born in Norton on October 4,1945 to Ivan and Fern (Livingood) Edgett. Upon her divorce, Elvin and Fern lived in Norton with his Grandparents, Perry and Maude (Bartels) Livingood and Uncle Wayne Livingood. Fern later married Harold Yearka where Elvin lived until graduation in 1965 from Huntley High School, Huntley, NE. Elvin’s home was always in Norton, spending time with his Grandmother and Uncle, and he spent every chance he had there. These times were where he learned his love for pets, vehicles and motorcycles. Elvin was proud of the fact he could say he still had his first car and motorcycle!! Elvin had a knack for tinkering and mastered the art of scrapping and recycling and more than likely where he earned his CB radio call of “Tin Collector.”

Elvin enlisted in the United States Army in 1965. He attended the United States Army Engineer School in Fort Leonard Wood, MO earning certificates in Gas Turbine and Generator Repair and Continental I Precise Power Generation Courses. These certifications allowed him to continue his military service in Germany instead of Vietnam. Upon his return, he worked at the Hilltop Texaco Service Station for Gilbert (Gil) Courtain.

In 1970, a young lady caught his eye each day on her way to or from work as she passed the Hilltop Texaco Gas Station. One day she stopped to get gas, and asked him to go on a date. After the third date he asked, “so when are we going to get married?” Pam wanted a long engagement so Elvin must have decided that good things come to those who wait and after eighteen long months, he married the love of his life on September 12, 1971, in Norton, KS. Pam passed away on September 14, 2018, after 47 blessed years of marriage.

Elvin was hired by Norton County Road and Bridge in June 1972 as a mechanic. He took his job very seriously while working on all kinds of equipment. Because of his attention to detail, he eventually became Shop Foreman, retiring in September 2010.

On September 6, 1972, Pam and Elvin welcomed Stacie Lynn into this world. Stacie was wrapped around his finger the minute she was born. Elvin’s love language wasn’t flashy. It was subtle and probably to many unnoticed. He was the person in the corner supporting, challenging, showing, teasing and watching. As an only child, Stacie always had friends over. Elvin learned quickly it was best to go “hide and tinker” outside because sometimes there could be an entire grade of girls for slumber parties, even entire classes or the entire junior high when dances were held across the street in the County Shop parking lot on warm summer nights. Regardless, he was watching and knew every friend that was there making sure they were always safe. Elvin teased Stacie’s friends and many of them were as special to him as they were to Stacie. Gayleen (Babcock) Chickering, was one of those “special” friends that became a true sister that Elvin welcomed as his own daughter.

Pam and Elvin created a marriage many wished and dreamed of and were each other’s biggest advocates in the good times and bad, especially in those final years when Pam’s health declined. They enjoyed traveling all across the United States in Elvin’s 1954 Kaiser Manhattan, sightseeing and attending Kaiser Frazer car meets with Gil & Ila Courtain, Stacie, Carter, Cooper and the nieces and nephews.

Elvin’s hobbies centered around the automotive industry. Ford and Kaiser were his trade and other makes were dirty words in his mind. He enjoyed rebuilding engines; tinkering with engines and vehicles; and collecting engines, transmissions, alternators, starters, tires, rims, hubcaps; and about any other part you can imagine. He had earned and achieved the gold star in collecting! Elvin was one of the first people thought of, if they needed a Ford part or help with an older Fords. His catch was he wouldn’t take any money. He wanted to trade for something and boy did he do that well. Plus, mowing and trimming were something Elvin enjoyed. He had a knack at bringing lawn mowers and trimmers back to life.

Elvin became a grandpa when his grandsons, Carter (2002) and Cooper (2005) were born. Elvin loved those two grandsons with all that was in him. Again, showing his love by teasing them. He wasn’t always the best at telling them he loved them but he would get that grin, when they shared about their mowing business or when they told him they’d bought their first vehicles (even though they didn’t pick Fords to start with). After Pam passed away, he was the one supporting the boys in all they did. Two granddaughters were also brought into Elvin’s family when Gayleen and Clay Chickering welcomed Addison and Morgan. Elvin had the best with two grandsons and two granddaughters.

He was a member of the Kaiser Frazer Owners Club International, Sunflower Pioneer Power Association and the Butterfield Trail Antique Auto Club.

Survivors include his daughter, Stacie Edgett-Minson (Eric Kinderknecht), WaKeeney, KS; grandsons, Carter (Bailey) Minson, Mechanicsburg, PA & Cooper Minson, WaKeeney, KS; sister, Linda (Cal) Fritz, Hildreth, NE; cousin, Jennifer (Adrian) Wiltshire, Lyndhurst, England; brother-in-law, John Lindenman, Morland, KS; nieces, Tammy (Roger) VanLoenen and family, Hill City, KS, Amaryah (Skyler) Jenkins and family, Grand Island, NE, Carina Fritz, Hildreth, NE; and nephews, Shawn (Melissa) Lindenman and family, Morland, KS, Cory (Beth) Lindenman and family, Winfield, KS, Brent Lindenman and family, Central City, NE and Gayleen (Clay) Chickering, Addison and Morgan, Glenwood, IA; step-siblings, Karen Edgett and Kelvin Edgett.

Elvin is preceded in death by his wife, Pamela (Corns) Edgett; parents, Ivan Edgett and Fern (Harold) Yearka; brother, Lynn Yearka; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenneth & Geraldine Corns; brother-in-law, David Corns; sister-in-law, Deborah (Corns) Lindenman; uncles, Wayne Livingood and Neil Livingood; grandparents, Perry & Maude Livingood; William and Cleo Edgett; friends and other relatives.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, January 30, 2026, at the Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home in Norton, KS. Burial with military honors will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Thursday, January 29 also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Elvin Edgett Memorial fund and sent in care of Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 215 W. Main St., Norton, KS 67654. In Loving Memory
Colette (Sharp) Miller

Nancy Colette (Sharp) Miller of Norton, affectionately known as Colette, passed away peacefully on January 13th, 2026 surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer. She was born on March 7, 1952 in Norton, Kansas to W.T. (Bill) and Beth (Wilson) Sharp. Colette leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and charitability with all that knew her.

Colette attended Norton Community Schools and graduated with the class of 1970. After graduating, she attended Northwest Kansas Vocational Technical School studying cosmetology and business in Goodland, Kansas.

On December 27, 1970, Colette was united in marriage to Mick Miller of Norcatur, Kansas at the First United Methodist Church in Norton. They had two children, Ashley (Miller) Maloley and Brock Miller, and have shared their love in Norton since. Colette worked as a cosmetologist at several salons in Norton. Creativity, organization, planning, and service began at a young age and continued throughout her life, exemplified through her endless giving and volunteering. She also enjoyed trips with her family and friends. These trips have been the blueprint of some of her kids’ and grandkids’ best memories. She spent many hours as room mother for class parties, planning birthday parties, making Halloween costumes, decorating, traveling, reading, and shopping. Colette loved to travel and spend her free time sewing. She gave color and life to everything she did.

With her husband, Colette gave much of her time and talent volunteering in the community. They have contributed to the Norton community in numerous ways such as assisting in the restoration of the Heaton building, restoring the Scheetz Motor Company building and Sinclair station, serving for decades on boards and committees of charitable organizations like the Norton County Community Foundation, and the winter celebration with carousel rides. This just skims the surface of the legacy Colette will be leaving. Norton is the place it is because of all these gifts. Above all, she was a fantastic mother and volunteer. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren, friends, and the community.

Colette’s life was not without its struggles- she faced multiple brave battles against cancer through her life and persevered through them all until the very end. She will be remembered as a woman with incredible grit and courage. Though she is deeply missed, loved ones will find comfort in knowing she is no longer in pain after fighting so long.

Colette was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws: Vernon and Ethel (Smith) Miller; aunts; Jackie Waddell, Pat Sharp, and Helen Woodrow, an uncle; Red Sharp, and nephew; Mike Schmidt.

She leaves to celebrate her life, her husband, Mick, of Norton; their children and grandchildren: Ashley (Phil), Grace, Claire and Clay Maloley of Holdrege; Nebraska and Brock (Jennifer), Emily, Erika and Ellie Miller of Norton; her siblings: Jim (Lida) Sharp of Norton, and Tom (Maya) Sharp of Scottsdale, Arizona; her sisters-in-law: Sherry (Greg) Pope of Prescott, Arizona and Nancy (Gary) Schmidt of Sharon Springs, Kansas; her aunt, Dixie Green of Ludell, KS; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and many special friends.

A celebration of life for Colette (Sharp) Miller will be held at the Norton Christian Church Friday, January 23, 2026 at 2:00 PM, with Jamie Amlong, officiating. Snacks and refreshments in the church following the services. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Thursday, January 22 at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date as the family is honoring her wish for cremation.

Because of Colette’s unwavering love for the community of Norton and living at the lake, in lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the Norton County Community Foundation or Friends of the Lake and may be sent in care of Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 215 W. Main St., Norton, KS 67654. Condolences may be left at www.plumergobber.com

In Loving Memory
Clifford “Lil Grizz” Wayne Pope

On December 21st, 2025, the trail grew quiet as Lil Grizz, master hat maker and keeper of old-world craftsmanship, hung up his tools for the last time. Clifford “Lil Grizz” Wayne Pope was born August 22, 1951 in Taylor, AR to Darrell Pope and Betty Gannon.

He attended high school in Spring Hill, Louisiana. At a young age he received his pilot’s license. After high school, he went on to receive a degree in Forestry. Grizz worked at various places including construction, manufacturing, oil field services, and at a lumberyard. He began working at Dogpatch USA doing old time photography and then later ran the Old-Time photo stand at the Territorial Park in Laramie, WY. He lived life joyfully and went on many adventures. His greatest one was when he went canoeing on the Red River and its major tributaries with his friend, Kelley Haynes. The trip was 900 miles in 90 days. Grizz also enjoyed white-water rafting, hiking, fishing, and trail riding. One year he bought a mechanical bull and travelled around setting it up at various events in Texas and across the South.

Lil Grizz met the Joy of his life at 1838 Rendezvous, 2012, and they married and lived happily ever after. …. Well not really but you get the picture!!

For over 50 years, Hats by Grizz shaped more than felt and brim, he shaped legacy. Each hat bore the mark of his hands, his heart, and his heritage. They weren’t just worn, they were lived in, passed down, and remembered.

Grizz didn’t just make hats. He made stories. He stitched grit into every crease, carved character into every curve, and crowned generations with dignity, humor, and soul. His workshop was a sanctuary of steam and felt, where tradition met artistry and every visitor left a little taller.

Now, he resides on ahead to the eternal cowboy/skinner camp, where the fire never dies and the coffee’s always hot. He’s sittin’ with Jesus under a sky that never dims, holding his favorite hat and smiling that wide, weathered grin. The angels wear brimmed crowns today that are hand-shaped, of course.

We’ll miss the man, the myth, the maker. But we’ll carry his spirit in every shadow cast by a well-worn brim. Rest easy, Lil Grizz. You’ve earned your place by the fire.

Grizz is survived by his wife, Joy Morris of New Almelo, KS; step-children that he loved dearly: Duncan Hugh Palmer of New Almelo, KS, Maudina Rose (Sean) Palmer-Aldair of North Hollywood, CA, and June Elizabeth Palmer of Minneapolis, MN; children: John Thomas Pope of Chicago, IL, Jesse Lee Wales of Ottawa, ON, Canada, and Alexander Jude Hanna (fiancé Hayley Woebse) of Bangor, PA; sisters, Genae (Myron) Herrick of Sarepta, LA and Charlotte “Chuck” Pope of Sarepta, LA; stepbrother, James Gannon of Falcon, AR, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family has chosen cremation per his wishes. Memorial activities will be announced at a later date on the “Hats By Grizz – Made With Joy” page. Memorial contributions may be made to https://gofund.me/cf01ee0f0 Condolences may be left at www.plumergobber.com

In Loving Memory
Robert P. Speer

Robert Po***ck Speer, 86, of Norton, Kansas passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025, at the Andbe Home. He was surrounded by the people he loved most, his family.

Bob was born on December 4, 1938 in Denver, Colorado to Robert W. and Helene (Kelly) Speer. After graduating from South High School in Denver, he studied sociology and theology, earning his Master of Divinity in 1966 from Chicago Theological Seminary. With a deep love of learning and helping people, he later earned his master’s degree in counseling from Fort Hays State University.
A great devotee of anecdotes and story telling, Bob frequently shared, “a young man once told me that there are two major decisions we make: what we do with our lives and with whom we do it. I got both of them right.”

The first of those two decisions was when Bob married “the most beautiful woman I ever saw," and the love of his life, Rita D. Winbolt, on June 9, 1963 in Hastings, Nebraska, with whom he raised three children, Becca, Allison and Matt.

On their lifelong journey together, Bob and Rita worked in their respective ministries in Glenwood, Iowa; Chicago, Illinois; Hudson, Kansas; and Lenora, Kansas before settling down in Norton, Kansas where Bob made the second great decision of his life - working for Valley Hope. He worked there as chaplain, counselor, and in public relations from 1968 until he retired 43 years later in 2011.

During his decades of ministry, he also served various churches as pastor, including several churches in Western Kansas.

Aside from his time with Valley Hope, Bob committed his energy to the people and projects of Norton, serving on various boards, including the Andbe Home and the Norton Library, as well as being a member of the local Lion’s Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed a variety of artistic hobbies including reading, writing, photography, painting, and drawing. His favorite pastimes also included deep thinking and philosophical and religious conversations for hours on end. Bob cared deeply for people and in recent years told Rita that he simply wanted to be kind to others.

Robert is survived by his wife Rita of 62 years; daughters, Rebecca (Lance) Arterburn of Brady, Nebraska, and Allison (Brandon) Winzurk of Acworth, Georgia; son, Matthew (Michelle) Speer of Basehor, Kansas; grandchildren: Christian (Jordan) Arterburn and their children, Brooks, Greyson, and Whitlee; Kaleb Arterburn; Madyson (Quinten) Chancellor with their expected baby; Annabella and Lillyanne Speer; Jordan Winzurk and Zac (Aleah) Winzurk and their son Noah; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dick and Terri Winbolt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Helene Speer.

Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30am Friday, December 5, 2025 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton with lunch following in the Catholic Parish Hall. A private family inurnment will be held at the Norton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hope or Care Beyond the Boulevard and may be sent in care of Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 215 W. Main St., Norton, Kansas 67654. Condolences may be left at www.plumergobber.com.
