National Airborne Day on August 16 honors the military's airborne divisions of the Armed Forces.

August 16, 1940, marks the date of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The successful jump validated the innovative concept of inserting U.S. ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute. These sky soldiers represent some of the most prestigious and expertly trained forces in the United States Army.

These plaques list everyone from Norwalk lost during wartime service since World War I. Clockwise from the top left, WWII, WWI (Town Green under the barrel of the cannon), Global War on Terrorism, Vietnam, Korea. With the exception of the WWI cannon, the other plaques are on the Shea-Magrath Memorial and Wall of Remembrance at Calf Pasture Beach on the side of the memorial wall that faces the water. If you want to learn about any of these heroes, a website dedicated to their lives and sacrifice (and more) is at https://norwalkctheroes.org This is what Memorial Day is all about. Share with your kids and grand-kids. We can never forget! 🇺🇸

April 9th is designated by Congress as the proclaimed observance of National Former POW Recognition Day, a day to honor the American servicemen and women who have experienced unimaginable trials and profound cruelty as prisoners of war. April 9th is a significant date because, on this date in 1942, the Bataan Death March began. This event was the forcible transfer (later classified as a war crime) by the Imperial Japanese Army of 60,000–80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war over sixty miles on foot, where they endured beatings, torture, and little food and water. Thousands of these POWs died. Former prisoners of war have withstood days, months, and sometimes years of imprisonment, missing irreplaceable milestones and simple moments at home. But they were never forgotten; they were remembered every day by loved ones. We are reminded of our solemn duty to serve our former prisoners of war, their families, and all our veterans as well as they served us. 🇺🇸
