I recently provided Hand Reflexology to a client with a history of high blood pressure. After the session, she reported noticing a decrease in her blood pressure to normal range. For the next week, she continued to check her blood pressure each day and was able to report that her blood pressure stayed in the normal range for about 6-7 days before she started to see an increase again.
A study was completed and published by the National Institute of Health on the effects of High Blood Pressure and Reflexology. After working with 100 participants, this study concluded that "foot reflexology was effective in reducing heart rate in stage-2 hypertension patients and was partially effective in also reducing blood pressure." They also stated that "Reflexology is non-invasive and can be completed in a short period of time as a complimentary therapy."
Reflexology is a science that deals with the principles that there are reflex areas in your hands and feet that correlate to every organ, gland and part of the body. By receiving reflexology, over 7000 nerve endings in your hands or your feet are stimulated and circulation and blood flow are increased to help bring your body into a state of balance.
While Reflexology has health benefits, it should never be a replacement for medical care. If you are dealing with high blood pressure, illness or other health concerns, please see your physician and ask them how you might be able to benefit from regular Reflexology sessions.
