Learn to feed yourself in accordance to your environment and your symptoms to stay on a path to wellness. Check out my post on Wellness Wonderland for more information on how to tell if you are too damp and how to feed yourself well if you are.
Did you know that Chinese Medicine deeply believes that the weather can impact our health? Anyone with osteoarthritis could likely attest to this sentiment. But did you know that they also believe that the food we eat can help to counter, or on the other hand, exacerbate, the effects of the weather? Every food that we eat has a set of properties that can help balance the opposite condition. What does that mean exactly? There are foods that are considered "hot" or "warming" foods that will help to counter "cold" conditions. There are foods that are "cool" that will help to counter "heat" conditions. There are foods that are "drying" that will help to counter "damp" conditions. You get the idea. So, today (in my home area, but this will apply to all of us at some point unless you live in the desert), it is a good idea to eat warming, drying foods. This is especially true if you regularly tend to have symptoms of dampness (sinus congestion, diarrhea, edema (swelling) of any part of your body, trouble with candida (yeast), fatigue, excessive vaginal discharge, greasy skin/acne, allergies, heaviness of the body, obesity or excess weight, excess mucus, certain tumors or cysts, and pain that is "stuck in one spot".) These are just some examples of how dampness manifests in the body. If these things sound familiar to you, you might be wondering, what foods you should eat to help. Knowing which foods to eat is very important, but knowing which foods to avoid is equally, if not MORE important. So, here are a list of foods (not comprehensive by any means but a good start) that help to reduce dampness and then a list of foods that will increase dampness and should be avoided in these conditions. Food truly can be your medicine or your poison, when you learn the properties of food, you can start to feed your body for wellness.
(See photo, if too much dampness can do that to a wall, what do you think it can do to your body?)
