February is heart health month. While fatal heart attacks are on the decline, deaths from cardiac disease continue as the NUMBER 1 CAUSE OF DEATH in the US. However, only a fraction of cardiac patients enroll in hospice toward the end of life. This issue of the empathy times paints a picture on how things can be better for this diagnosis.

Honoring MLK’s Legacy: A Call for Justice in End-of-Life Care

As we reflect on Martin Luther King Jr.'s enduring legacy of justice, equity, and compassion, his words resonate profoundly: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” These words challenge us to examine how we care for one another, especially at life’s most vulnerable moments.

End-of-life care is not just a medical journey; it is a deeply human experience that should be shaped by dignity, respect, and the values of the individual and their community. Yet, disparities persist. Communities of color and marginalized groups often face barriers to quality palliative and hospice care, ranging from systemic inequities to cultural and language gaps in healthcare systems.

To honor Dr. King’s dream, we must work to close these gaps and ensure every person has access to compassionate, culturally competent, and equitable end-of-life care. This means advocating for policies that expand access to care, educating communities about their rights and options, and training healthcare providers to listen, understand, and serve diverse needs.

In the spirit of Dr. King’s fight for equality, let us commit to building a healthcare system where justice and humanity prevail—even in life’s final chapter.

How can you contribute to this mission in your community? Let’s keep the dream alive.
