A continuation of some of my favorite mobility drills. Start small and breathe deep. Regular practice will help with strength and confidence. Less overcompensation so the proper muscles can do their job.

2nd attempt (not a fan of social media haha). So I’ve been coming across a common theme lately- folks will tell me that they are injured and too scared to move. Or told not to. Or say they are too old. The problem of the injury oftentimes is because of a LACK of movement. We fall into patterns where we move linear, even with exercise and weight lifting. We need more asymmetrical movements, sideways, up, down, flexion/extension, overhead, TWISTING. I know I am not the first to say this, but some people may not be exposed to this type of information. Why do you think patients are now told after knee or hip surgeries to immediately start walking? Movement heals! Here are just a few of my favorite shoulder mobility drills, using weights to encourage strength within the movement. Stretching alone can cause laxity in joints and over time the elasticity of the muscle creates weakness. Move with purpose and fun.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I’ve been coming across a common theme which I would like to address. I know that I am not the first person to say this, but I also know that not everyone knows this information. - I often hear people say that they are injured and then feel too scared to move, or at some point they were told not to. The truth is, just like massage helps bring blood flow to an area, so too does movement. That and other things. Why do you think patients are immediately told to get up after a hip or knee surgery? Movement heals! The problem that started the injury often comes from the body not actually moving in all planes of movement regularly. Even in typical weight lifting it can be quite linear in approach. We need circular movements, asymmetrical, sideways, over head, flexion/extension, TWISTING. Here are just a few of my favorites of shoulder mobility using light weights to encourage stability within the movement. Stretching alone oftentimes is not enough- this coming from a yoga teacher.

Small techniques for breathing better!! Pic #1 is to demonstrate that you should be thinking of breathing as being a cylindrical action. Belly expands, ribs flare from either side, back body opens. Generally it is good to breathe mostly from your trunk, while the chest opens and shoulders rise just slightly. Too much chest breathing can result in neck and shoulder tension. Pic #2 shows an example of opening your ribs laterally to assist in the movement needed for rib expansion. Pic #3 is simply good posture- tall spine, open chest and shoulders. Poor posture congests the diaphragm and over time causes tightness, underuse and therefore weakness. Effecting not only your breathing, but digestion, blood and lymph flow. The fascia gets stuck and pulls down. This causes hip tightness, back and shoulder pain. Potentially forward head posture. Glute weakness, etc etc! So whatever stuff you’ve maybe heard about how posture doesn’t matter.. doesn’t make much sense. I hope this helps, I’ll have a few more to add.

Stress creates tension. Tension creates stagnation and instability and sometimes overcompensation in other muscles and joints, nerves, ligaments and lymph. This needs movement in order to FLOW. Call it energy, chi , prana, whatever you like. More specifically it is also lymph, blood, and fascia. By doing passive movements such as these every single day- 3 to 5 minutes each, you are opening the thoracic area, shoulders, neck, back, and hips. Just to name a few. With that you get less pain, better breathing, and more flow throughout your system. Even better if you can do it in the sun barefoot on the grass! 😎

Corny post alert! This is to show my softness and gratitude for what is at this point in my life. I have always strived to be an example of what a person can be, despite many years of abuse and neglect through my childhood. Despite emotionally maturing probably way too late in my life. Pushing for expected outcomes, thinking that was the only way. Going through extreme bouts of depression where I felt I wouldn’t make it out alive. I knew deep inside that the only way out is through, and I had to face myself. Still do. My point is to say that I never considered myself a victim to my circumstances, in fact I feel like it was all meant for me. I am still learning so much about healing, and while I could tell myself that I have to right to talk about practical things I’m still so new to, I acknowledge that I have many years of personal experience. I am happier now than ever before. Even with owning less material possesions, having less friends. Arguably less to do. I am soft because I am at peace. There will probably always be days where I backtrack, but I am more apt to handle it better when it comes. So thank you for all who believe in me, and support me in any way. Truly blessed.
