Sudden flashes of light. Floating specks in your vision. A creeping shadow that seems to come out of nowhere. These could be warning signs of retinal detachment—a serious eye condition that can cause permanent vision loss if not promptly treated.

The good news is that if retinal detachment is caught early, it’s often treatable with a quick, in-office procedure. Knowing what to look for can help protect your sight.

Here's how to catch it early: https://bit.ly/3HLDYjk

Health Tip: Learn to Identify Internet Scams

Internet scams can be tricky to distinguish from real health information. Know how to tell the difference between credible health information and false claims.

There are a few things scams have in common including:
-Sounding too good to be true.
-All evidence is anecdotal rather than based on research.
-Advertisements feature videos or sound bites that are AI-generated.

Some key phrases to watch for in these types of ads are:
-“Lose weight fast” claims crediting their quick “trick.”
-Claims that the product is “all natural” or “clean.”
-Anything promoting mistrust between you and your healthcare provider, like “Doctors don’t want you to know about this!”

Remember: these scams have one goal – to sell products for profit. Scammers know how to appeal to your needs, and AI-generated media along with crafty writing tactics can make the ad seem real.

Get information on currently circulating health scams from the Better Business Bureau, U.S. Food & Drug Administration, and Federal Trade Commission websites.

Always talk to your doctor before starting any new supplements or health products.

According to data from Truveta, a health care analytics company, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses in people older than 30 have been on the rise since 2021. From January 2021 to October 2024, the rate increased by approximately 61% in adults ages 30 to 44 and 64% in those 45 to 64.

Eunice Yuen, MD, PhD, a Yale Medicine psychiatrist who treats children, adolescents, and adults, has noticed this rise firsthand—especially among middle-aged adults who are parents.

“I have several hypotheses of why there is an increase, including the high-demand lifestyles many people live, with always having to be ‘on,’” Dr. Yuen says. “There’s also a tendency to self-diagnose using social media or other resources outside the health care profession. I think people turn to these places seeking, answers, solutions, and identity.”

Here, Dr. Yuen discusses why more adults are being diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder—and what it means for patients: https://bit.ly/41OqsSO

It’s Medical Vocabulary Monday!

This week’s term is essential tremor.

Essential tremor is a nervous system disorder that causes involuntary, rhythmic shaking. It most commonly affects the hands, especially during purposeful movements like writing, eating, or holding a cup, but it can also impact the head, voice, and other parts of the body.

While not life-threatening, essential tremor can:
-Interfere with daily activities and independence
-Become more noticeable with stress, fatigue, or caffeine
-Sometimes be confused with Parkinson’s disease, though the two are different conditions

Treatments may include medications, lifestyle adjustments, or in more severe cases, surgical options to help manage symptoms.

Health Tip: Watch Out for Your Back While Sitting at a Desk

Our spines are not designed to sit down all day, but work and school schedules make it difficult to avoid. Fortunately, there are ways to minimize back pain from long sitting periods.

You can:
-Take breaks from sitting to stretch or walk around
-Use a standing desk
-Keep your shoulders back to maintain good posture

While some stiffness maybe inevitable after a long day, these steps can help reduce the stress across your lumbar spine.

It’s Medical Vocabulary Monday!

This week’s term is timely as tick season is in full swing and cases are popping up in nearby states: Powassan virus disease.

Powassan virus disease is a rare but serious illness caused by the Powassan virus, which is spread to people through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Unlike some tick-borne illnesses, Powassan virus can be transmitted in as little as 15 minutes after a tick attaches.

It can lead to serious complications such as:
-Encephalitis: inflammation of the brain, which may cause confusion, seizures, or difficulty speaking.
-Meningitis: inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, which may cause severe headache, stiff neck, and fever.

There is no specific treatment, so prevention is key: use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and check for ticks after outdoor activities.

Health Tip: Check the Air-Quality Index on Wildfire-Smoke-Filled Days

Smoky skies can be hard on the lungs—and when wildfires rage, lingering smoke causes air-quality changes far outside the hot spot. Certain groups are more sensitive to the effects of wildfire smoke than others, including those with heart or lung disease, older adults, infants, children, and pregnant women.

Lung-friendly steps to take until wildfire smoke clears include:
-Check the air-quality index
-Limit strenuous activities
-Stay indoors
-Use an air purifier
-Mask when outdoors (ask your doctor)

Mild allergy-like symptoms can happen when wildfire smoke fills the skyline. Seek medical attention right away if you have difficulty breathing, need a rescue inhaler, or experience chest pain.

A recent CDC report found that Americans are consuming more than half of their daily calories in the form of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs). And the daily percentage is even higher for children.

UPFs are foods that come with a long list of ingredients, chemical additives, and little to no “whole” foods in them.

Examples of UPFs include:
-Sugary drinks
-Prepackaged snacks
-Frozen pizza
-Ready-to-eat meals
-Instant noodles
-Prepackaged breads
-Fast foods

Frequent consumption of these types of foods is linked to a variety of health conditions, including heart disease, mental health disorders, and type 2 diabetes.

Here is what you need to know about ultraprocessed foods and your health: https://bit.ly/4lkIkvL
