Born on October 3, 1938 in Revere, MA, Stan was a son of the late Stanford S. “Sully” Sr. and Helen (Knowlton) Pelosi. He grew up in Revere, MA and Saugus, MA and attended school at Malden Catholic High School, graduating with honors. Stan furthered his education at Boston College where he earned his bachelors of science in chemistry with a minor in theology. He then attended the University of New Hampshire where he received a PhD in organic chemistry and found true chemistry with his future wife, Evelyn Tyminski, another organic chemistry PhD student.

Following school Stan was a Captain in the United States Army Chemical Corps from 1965-1967 at Fort Eustis, VA and was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict.

After his service Stan began his career with the former Norwich Pharmacal Company as a research chemist where he made many close friends and patented numerous compounds for use in pharmaceutical products. Stan found joy in his research, collaborating with other scientists, and took great pride in his work. He continued in this position when the company was acquired by Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals until his retirement in 1993.

Stan enjoyed wintering in Palm Beach Gardens, FL for many years. He was an avid stock market investor, enjoyed skiing, sailing and traveling, was a former volunteer at the Norwich Pharmacal Company Museum in the Eaton Center, and a long-time member of the American Chemical Society. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family over long dinners, attending a multitude of school sporting events, following his favorite New England sports teams, and hearing about his grandchildren’s adventures.

In addition to his wife, Stan is survived by his two children, Sharon Pelosi (Scott Sutton), of Norwich and Steve Pelosi, of Norwich; grandchildren, Jessie-Marie Pelosi Sutton and Gabriel Sutton; brother, Frank (Marcella) Pelosi; nephew, Christopher (Emily) Pelosi; and great niece, Harper Pelosi.

The following obituary appears in the Wednesday, August 27, 2025 edition of the Norwich Evening Sun.

Frank Speziale, 89, well-known photographer, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

Frank was born a son of the late Angelo and Domenica (Berte) Speziale on July 26, 1936 in Canneto- Lipari, Province of Messina, Sicily, Italy. Almost 20 years after his birth, Frank decided to immigrate to the United States. Booked to sail on the Andrea Doria in July 1956, he, instead, found passage on the SS Cristoforo Colombo, the former liner’s sister ship, in May out of Naples. Fortunately for Frank he made that switch, because the Andrea Doria sank off the southern coast of Nantucket Island on July 25, after colliding with the Swedish ship MS Stockholm. After disembarking in New York City, he traveled to Norwich where he was initially employed by Norwich Knitting Mills and Norwich Shoe Company before pursuing a 20-plus-year career with the Norwich Pharmacal Company. It was there at the Pharmacy where he first got introduced to photography.

While at the Norwich Pharmacal Company, Frank met a photographer who was selling all of his equipment. That transaction, which occurred sometime in the early 1960s, resulted in his first camera – a Graflex 45 speed graphic 4 x 5 large format unit. A few years later Frank would begin his long and outstanding career at The Evening Sun, where he was proudly employed for 56 years. Frank’s vast career included him covering the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Cooperstown for 17 years and the 1988 Tour de France in Paris.

Frank enjoyed proclaiming his noted resume, including notable images of Mikhail Gorbachev, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and President of the Soviet Union, at Colgate University in April 1997; former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary, at the Canasawacta Country Club in August 2002; Pope Francis in Philadelphia in September 2015; both George H.W. and George W. Bush in Cooperstown following their presidential terms in office; William Shatner, American actor; and several baseball athletes, including Yogi Berra, Ralph Kiner, and Cal Ripken to name a few. His work has been published in several Sports Illustrated magazines.

Countless wedding photos, and legal and commercial portraits have been captured by Frank during his lifetime. Frank also flew a Cessna 150 plane, took great pride in his gardens (especially his tomatoes, basil, and garlic which he shared with everyone),loved traveling to Europe, enjoyed scuba diving, and relished making wine from the grapes which flourished behind his Clinton Street home. Frank was always visible in the community riding his Vino to and from local sporting events. He enjoyed writing songs and playing guitar. More recently, his song “Filicudi” was submitted to the Library of Congress for copyright. For several years, he hosted “Chico and his guitar” - a radio talk show on WCHN in Norwich. In 2023, Frank was unanimously inducted into the Norwich High School Sports Hall of Fame for his dedication to photographing local sporting events. He was also honored as Grand Marshall of the “Parade of Lights” holiday parade and by dedication of the Basketball Boosters program.

Frank was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church in Norwich.

On June 7, 1969 in Norwich, Frank married Patricia Nichols, who survives. He is also survived by his children, Mark (Susan) Speziale, Cristina Green (Jeffrey Sneden), Angela M. Speziale, Domenica “Mica” (Brett) Holleran, and Francesco Speziale; grandchildren, Amanda (Jorge), Michael (Michelle), Thomas (Kirstin), Alicia, Angela, Alexandria (John Paul), Arianna, Brett, Bella “scaramouche,”and Emily; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Sophia, Noah, Chloe, Christian, and Leonardo; siblings, Tina, Bartolo, and Antonio; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Frank will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Church of St. Bartholomew. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Friday, August 29, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. prior to the calling hours. Burial will occur at St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Frank’s memory may be made to St. Bartholomew’s Church, 30 Pleasant Street, Norwich, NY 13815 or to the Bob Simon Fund at Bassett Cancer Institute, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

The following obituary appears in the Monday, August 11, 2025 edition of the Norwich Evening Sun.

Mary Lourdes Gantt, age 73, passed away peacefully on the morning of August 2, 2025, in Cooperstown, NY, with her daughter by her side. In her final days, she was surrounded by love through frequent visits from her grandchildren and her brother. Mary’s passing marks the close of a life defined by resilience, hope, generosity, strength, and an unshakable devotion to family, community, and faith.

Mary was born at St. Luke's Hospital in Utica, NY, on August 25, 1951, to Oswald and June Schieffer. She grew up in Sherburne, NY, where her family was well known for their local businesses- a bowling alley and Ossie’s Restaurant. From an early age, Mary learned the value of hard work and hospitality. One of her first jobs was setting pins by hand at the bowling alley, an early glimpse into the tireless work ethic and grit that would shape her character.

Mary was proud, headstrong, and stubborn, traits she undoubtedly inherited from her father. She knew what she wanted, how things should be done, and wasn’t afraid to say so. Whether it was the way the restaurant should run, the cleanliness of her home, the management of her healthcare, or how her coffee was made, Mary paid attention to every detail. Her food had to be served fresh and hot and believed in doing things right. That pride, that precision, and that strong will helped throughout life.

Mary had a sharp eye for opportunity and a deep passion for her family’s business. She played a pivotal role in helping her parents expand Ossie’s Restaurant to a second location in Norwich, NY. She not only found the property and helped secure it, but she also managed it faithfully for its entire lifespan, right up until after her mother’s passing. The restaurant business was her fourth child. Her staff became family, and she never forgot their loyalty, hard work, shared memories. And the customers always came first, with some becoming family over time. When the time came to close that chapter, Mary with her older daughter opened Mary’s on the Corner in April 2008, during a snowstorm, a moment that perfectly embodied her resilience and love for the restaurant business. Her health forced her to step back and close the doors in January 2018, again during a snowstorm.

Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt, and friend. Her daughters, and her son, who was adopted at birth, were the center of her world. She made it her mission to be present for every moment- swim meets, rock concerts, graduations, birthday parties, you name it. If it involved her kids or grandkids, Mary was there.

There was never a time when Mary didn’t have a pool at home. Swimming wasn’t just a hobby, it was a ritual. She swam daily for decades at noon, logging winter laps at the Norwich Family YMCA and moving outdoors to her backyard during the summer. When she could no longer swim or maintain her pool, she ensured her daughter bought one for her family. Chasing her grandkids around her pool was her favorite pastime. So much laughter.

Whether telling stories from her childhood in Sherburne, recalling restaurant antics, or just sitting around with family and friends, she believed in celebrating life loudly and often. Mary was a master party-thrower. Her cookouts, birthdays, and backyard bashes were unforgettable- the food, the music, the cops being called because of the noise ordinance…good times!

Mary never had much in the way of material things, but what she had, she gave freely- a meal, a ride, a place to stay, or simply her time and presence. She was easy to talk to when times were hard, and her generosity wasn’t about what she could afford. Mary was also a passionate sports fan. Besides watching her grandkids, she especially loved watching Patrick Mahomes light up the field and it brought out her competitive spirit.

Many knew of Mary’s health issues but what they didn’t know is that she was born with a rare and challenging medical condition called Klippel-Trénaunay Syndrome (KTS), a complex vascular disorder characterized by the very large Port-wine stain across the entire left side of her body and a range of painful vascular complications. For decades, the condition went undiagnosed and misunderstood, but Mary, ever determined, took control. About fifteen years ago, she diagnosed herself and became her own fiercest advocate. She traveled to Boston, Albany, Syracuse, Pennsylvania and beyond, educating her doctors, assembling care teams, and refusing to be dismissed. Her tireless pursuit of answers set an extraordinary example of resilience and self-empowerment. She never gave up.

Mary’s anchor was her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Her belief was lived, felt, and shared. She would often say, “God doesn’t do anything to us. He gets us through it.” Her relationship with her Lord and Savior was the source of her strength, her peace, and her joy. It carried her through pain, uncertainty, and loss and it now carries those she leaves behind.

Mary is predeceased by her parents, Oswald, and June Schieffer; her sister, Joanne Beeching; her brother, Michael Scheiffer; her niece, Danielle Migdal; and her uncles, Jack (Sissy), James, and Robert (Jean) Lewis.

She is survived by her daughters, Saundra Gantt, and Saundra’s children, Ravyn Sahara (and Ravyn’s son, Keanu), Killian Kegan, Saige Seraya, and Dradon Maddox; her daughter, Rebecca Ertelt (fiancé, Dan); her son, Evan Ertelt; her brother, Eddie Schieffer (Carol); her sister, Theresa Schieffer; her uncle, Richard Lewis (Cindy); and her favorite uncle George Lewis. Mary is remembered lovingly by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Jude’s Research, Tunnel for Towers, and the Sturge-Weber foundation, all causes she gave to monthly for decades.

Funeral services for Mary will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Wilson Funeral Home. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, in Norwich, from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will immediately follow the service at St. Malachy’s Cemetery in Sherburne.
