Shoveling snow is a leading cause of winter-related injuries and cardiac events, especially during prolonged storms like this one. In addition, temperatures will remain well below normal, with highs in the teens and single digits and dangerous wind chills, increasing the risk of cold-related illness and injury.
Please consider the following safety reminders:
❄️Take frequent breaks and avoid overexertion — heavy snow combined with extreme cold significantly increases strain on the body.
❄️Push snow, when possible, rather than lifting and lift with your legs — not your back.
❄️Shovel smaller amounts at a time.
❄️Dress in multiple warm layers, cover exposed skin, and be mindful of signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
❄️Limit time outdoors and take warming breaks inside as needed – it’s not going anywhere.
❄️Stop immediately if you experience chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, numbness, or unusual fatigue, and seek medical attention if needed.
