Roderick Perry was attending his son's lacrosse game when his family noticed he was slumped over and unable to stand up. His responses were also delayed, and he couldn’t move his left arm. Scans revealed that he had a type of stroke that is often fatal.

When he arrived at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Shreveport in Louisiana, Roderick could not walk or sit unsupported at the edge of the bed. He has worked for a local sheriff’s office for more than 30 years, and the toughness and resilience he developed throughout his career carried over into his rehabilitation.

Through hard work in our stroke program, he has made tremendous progress and can now walk. It has been a pleasure to be part of his remarkable recovery. Keep up the great work, Roderick!

Bob, 99, Bill, 101, and John, 99, each came to our Encompass Health hospital in Sewickley, Pennsylvania for different reasons. During their therapy sessions together, they discovered they all served in the South Pacific during World War II around the same time. It was an honor to hear their stories and watch them bond over shared experiences. We are grateful for their years of dedicated service and were proud to be able to serve them during their recovery!

During American Stroke Month, we recognize patients like Ken who are recovering from a stroke and working hard to regain their independence.
Before his stroke, Ken was fully independent, working full time and actively involved in his grandchildren’s lives. When he arrived at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Cincinnati, he needed significant help to walk, manage steps and complete everyday tasks.

Through physical, occupational and speech therapy, Ken focused on improving his strength, balance, speech and daily skills. He gave every therapy session his full effort, with the constant support of his wife, Cathy. His goal was to return home safely and get back to the life he loved.

By discharge, Ken regained his independence and returned home walking, transferring and completing daily activities on his own.

It is our privilege to help patients like Ken recover and return to what matters most.

Angela came to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Cincinnati needing significant assistance with mobility and self-care. She initially required a standing device and two people to help with transfers. Through daily therapy and steady determination, she made consistent progress and gained confidence. By discharge, Angela needed help from only one person for self-care, completed transfers independently with a walker, walked 50 feet and safely managed stairs. We are proud of her hard work and progress!

After having a stroke, Jennifer came to Encompass Health Cincinnati unable to walk or manage stairs safely. On her first day, she needed two people to help her walk just 20 feet and could only climb one step. Before discharge, Jennifer was walking more than 200 feet with a cane and going up and down a full flight of stairs. Jennifer showed up every day ready to work, stayed positive through every session and never gave up. Just four days after discharge, she will walk down the aisle on her wedding day. Congratulations, Jennifer — we wish you a lifetime of happiness!
