Karuna Wellness Studio

Karuna Wellness Studio Karuna Wellness Studio is built on acceptance and whole-body self-care. Welcome to Karuna: Nutrition + Movement, we're glad you’re here! First - KARUNA.

Karuna is a first-of-its-kind wellness studio offering nutrition counseling, cooking lessons and movement classes. Karuna was started by our owner Kate Thomas as an individual private nutrition practice in 2013. With a background in marketing and advertising, Kate always knew she wanted to build her practice into something bigger. During her first few years of counseling clients, the idea of Karuna came to shape - a place where children and adults can learn to take care of their bodies in a place that’s fun, warm, all-inclusive and non-judgemental. This dream has finally come alive as we open our doors to the community in June 2019 with a brand new office with two movement studios, a small teaching kitchen and a growing team of licensed Registered Dietitians to provide evidence-based, individualized nutrition counseling. So what does our company name mean? Karuna is a Sanskrit word that translates as compassion. In her years of counseling in her private practice, owner Kate found that her clients ability to make changes to their health and lifestyle came down to one thing - having compassion for their body and their choices. We are all SO HARD ON OURSELVES, and well, that's just not fair. At Karuna, we feel that self compassion is the first step to better health and positive relationships with food, and our goal is to teach children and adults to show more compassion for themselves with a whole-body approach: eating well, moving their bodies, sleeping, and decreasing stress. As always, our practice strives to provide a supportive, non-judgemental, body positive, and welcoming environment for all our clients. Next - NUTRITION. Well, this one is easier. This business was founded on a practice providing nutrition counseling using a "whole health" philosophy and we continue to pride ourselves on evidence-based, medical nutrition therapy implemented with a real life, whole food approach that is realistic and sustainable. With this, we will continue to take a strict "non-diet approach" as we continue to intertwine principles of intuitive eating and Health At Every Size®, to support our goal of compassion. We will continue to improve our program offerings for families struggling with meal planning, picky eaters, disordered eating and eating disorders, and weight management from a weight neutral, HAES approach. With our new kitchen space, we plan to that take our clients outside the office and into the kitchen, where we can truly foster a new relationship with food. And lastly - MOVEMENT. It is our goal to find new and creative ways to bring more movement options to our clients. Exercise does NOT mean putting in hours at the gym, and we strive to find new, fun ways to help our clients move their bodies with confidence and joy . Movement has been shown to decrease stress response in the body, and as a result, reduce the heart rate, lower blood pressure, and ease respiration. Movement can improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, teach self-soothing techniques, breathing, awareness of emotions, the ability to be present, and fosters the development of a positive and compassionate relationship with the body. For children, structured physical activity provides both an energy and emotional outlet. It decreases stress, teaches control, socialization, discipline and relaxation. We believe that joyful movement is critical to mental and physical health and well-being. We look forward to working and growing with you all! Please feel free to contact our office with questions about our practice, philosophy or to book an appointment. Phone // 781-269-1623

Which one are you working on right now? 💛

A lot of people come to us thinking healing their relationship with food will mean finding the right rules.

But what we see, over and over, is that healing usually comes from letting go of them.

From eating foods for enjoyment.
From responding to hunger instead of ignoring it.
From stopping the habit of judging yourself after every meal.

This work isn’t about being perfect or eating a certain way. It’s about rebuilding trust with your body and taking food out of the constant moral conversation it’s been stuck in.

And if you want support as you work through this, our dietitians are here to walk alongside you.

🎉 We accept insurance, and many clients pay $0 out of pocket. Head over to our website (link in bio) to learn more!

Cast iron cookware comes up more often than you’d think in nutrition conversations.

For some people, it can be a helpful option because small amounts of iron can transfer into food during certain types of cooking.

It’s not a replacement for iron-rich foods, supplements, or individualized care, but it can be one more tool in the mix for those thinking about iron intake.

And honestly, it’s also just a great pan. There are so many satisfying, everyday meals that work really well in cast iron!

Swipe through for when cast iron might be helpful, what it’s best used for, and a few beginner tips if you’re curious.

And tell us 👇

Have you cooked with cast iron before? What’s your favorite thing to make in it? 💚

You created a new life.

And somehow, almost immediately, the world starts asking when you’ll be smaller again.

When you’ll feel “normal.”

When your body will look like proof that you’re doing postpartum right.

That pressure is heavy. And it’s unfair.

Your body didn’t just change.
It adapted. It carried. It labored. It healed while you were learning how to care for someone else.

It held you through exhaustion, recovery, and a complete shift in identity.

There is no bouncing back from that. There is only moving forward in a body that has been changed by something enormous.

You don’t need to fix it. You don’t need to rush it. You don’t need to prove anything with your appearance.

Your body is allowed to take its time finding itself again💛

If your brain feels loud around food lately, there’s probably a reason👇🏼

“Food noise” usually isn’t a lack of willpower or discipline. It’s often a sign that your body is trying to get your attention.

We see this all the time when people:

– aren’t eating enough overall
– are skipping breakfast or snacks
– are trying to eat “clean” or “healthy” most of the time
– aren’t letting themselves eat foods they actually enjoy
– feel scared that cravings will spiral or lead to weight gain

When food feels restricted, monitored, or delayed, your body responds by thinking about it more. Not less.

That’s not failure. That’s biology.

Food noise tends to quiet down when your body starts to trust that food is available, allowed, and consistent.

When meals are regular. When snacks are planned. When enjoyment isn’t something you have to earn.

This is the kind of work we do with clients as dietitians. Not silencing your thoughts. But instead, listening to what they’re pointing to 💚

Oatmeal is one of those foods that has a weird reputation.

Some people love it. Some people are deeply over it.
A lot of people have only eaten it when they felt like they were “being good.”

That’s not how we think about it.

We love oatmeal as dietitians because it’s practical.

✔️ It’s easy to keep around and have on hand in your pantry for months.

✔️ It works when you’re short on time.

✔️ It can be cozy or basic or dressed up, depending on the day.

And when you pair it in a way that actually satisfies you, it can carry you through the morning without a ton of effort 👏🏼

All wins here!

➡️ Swipe through for how we think about oatmeal as dietitians, plus tips for making it work in real life.

And tell us honestly, are you an oatmeal person… or not really? 🥣💛

Easy ways to get in more omega-3s!

Omega-3s are a type of fat that support heart health, brain function, and long-term health (aka, things we all care about).

They’re found in both plant and animal sources, including chia seeds, flax, walnuts, edamame, soybean and flaxseed oil, as well as fatty fish like salmon and sardines.

✨ Dietitian reminder: Omega-3s are important, but they don’t need to come with rules or pressure.

The best source is the one you’ll actually eat and enjoy 👏🏼

If you want to learn more, we shared a blog this week all about omega-3s and cholesterol.

🎉 Comment “OMEGA” and we’ll send it your way!

When people ask us, “What’s the best way to keep moving in the winter?”

Our answer is always this 👇🏼

Let movement look different!

We can’t be the only ones who notice that winter changes everything.

Less daylight. Colder temps. Lower energy. More time indoors.

And suddenly the movement you enjoyed in warmer months feels harder to access.

It’s okay for things to change.

Movement doesn’t have to look the same year-round to still be supportive.

For some people, having guidance can really help take the pressure off.

A personal trainer can support you in adapting movement seasonally, building strength in a way that feels doable, and finding options that work with your energy, not against it.

Swipe for a super cozy, kid-friendly recipe 🤤

(Shoutout to Marsha McDougal of Budget Bytes for this one 🤍)

This is the kind of meal we love recommending as dietitians!

It’s comforting, filling, and easy to make on a busy night, without needing to overthink it.

🎉 And a bonus: it’s budget-friendly too.

Binge eating and ADHD often overlap more than people realize, and it’s not about willpower. 💛

Things like impulsivity, executive function challenges, emotional regulation, sensory needs, and inconsistent hunger cues can all intersect, making eating feel confusing or out of control at times. When food becomes a quick, accessible way to meet unmet needs or cope with overwhelm, it makes a lot of sense. This isn’t a lack of discipline...it’s your brain doing its best with the tools it has.

Working with a registered dietitian can offer compassionate, non-diet support that’s aligned with how an ADHD brain actually functions.

We wrote a blog post breaking this down even more, comment "💛" below and we’ll send you the link!

Our first one food wonder of the new year…

Featuring ✨LENTILS✨

What we love about lentils is how often they end up saving dinner 👏🏼

They’re easy to keep on hand.

They cook quickly without soaking or planning ahead.

They make meals feel more filling without turning dinner into a project.

And they work just as well in something cozy as they do in something quick 🙌🏼

Not to mention, they are packed with all the nutrients!!

➡️ Swipe through for simple, realistic ways our dietitians use lentils in everyday meals.

And if you want more ideas you can save and come back to later, we’re sharing recipes and meal inspiration on Pinterest as part of our One Food Wonder series.

Reminders from Winnie the Pooh 🥹

Healing your relationship with food and your body isn’t some big, dramatic transformation.

It happens in the everyday, smaller moments.

It looks like honoring your hunger, even if it’s a different time than usual.

It looks like choosing kindness toward your body, even when it feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar.

It looks like realizing your body was never meant to be the most interesting thing about you in the first place.

It’s remembering how lucky you are to have a body that carries you through your life, even when it doesn’t feel perfect.

Save this post for the days you need the reminder 💛
