Kate first found yoga at 15 while trying to get out of PE class. She wrote a letter to her principal, found a class that fit her schedule, and walked into a yoga room without knowing anything about it. She started going every day. “I had no idea what I was doing or what yoga even meant,” she says. That was 25 years ago.

It wasn’t until later, after a serious accident, that yoga took on a deeper meaning. Returning to the mat was humbling. “My body was different. It took months to get back into poses that once felt easy.”

Through that experience, yoga became a way to appreciate her body and stay present. “It’s the only reality we really have.”

At Sukha, she finds something special in every teacher. “Everyone is amazing.” She especially holds gratitude for Laura and Linda, who supported her during her recovery.

Her advice to beginners is simple. “Listen to your intuition. Trust your body. Love what it can do. Be open to the journey.”
Off the mat, Kate is a doula, a maker of tallow balm, and a single mom to two awesome humans. They love traveling together and are always dreaming up their next adventure.

The first thing we cut when we’re overwhelmed is the thing that would actually help.

We have so many distractions right now. Much of it designed to create fear and overwhelm.

And when fear wins, we stop doing the things that would actually serve us. We numb. We distract. We find the money for the things that pull us further from ourselves and somehow decide we can’t afford the things that bring us back.

It’s a crazy cycle.

This month at Sukha Yoga, our message is simple: Clear the Path. Let the Energy Flow.

Because when you show up to your mat, something shifts. The pain moves through. You get access to your intuition. Your clarity. Your deep knowing that all is well.

Sukha is not just a place to stretch. It is a sanctuary. And whatever your circumstances, there is a place for you here.

Swipe through for this month’s full message, and come back to your mat.

Teri first stepped into a yoga class about 30 years ago. By the end of that very first class, she had completely let go of her workday thoughts. “I knew then there was something really magical about yoga, and I wanted more of that.”

Still, it wasn’t until she joined Sukha that she committed to a consistent practice.

Now a founding member since we opened in 2014, she has been part of our community from the very beginning.

One of the biggest changes she noticed was physical. She used to wake up with body aches and blamed it on getting older. After practicing regularly, those aches disappeared. But the deeper shift was internal. “The calm and grounded feeling I experience during yoga carries into the rest of my day.” Over time, she has developed a quieter mind.

Teri encourages new students to start slow, listen to their bodies, use props, and rest in child’s pose when needed. “Slow and steady works much better than comparing yourself to others and pushing too hard too fast. It’s a practice, not a race.”

Now enjoying early retirement, Teri fills her days with travel, hiking Marin’s beautiful trails, and spending time with family, friends, and the furry ones. She also treasures the yoga retreats she has attended with Sukha teachers, calling them “a beautiful way to deepen your practice and develop friendships.”

For Teri, yoga has been a steady source of calm, connection, and quiet joy for decades.

Nathan had wanted to try yoga for years, but it wasn’t until early 2024 that he and his wife finally gave it a try. They started with free classes at their gym and quickly got hooked. Since then, they’ve been practicing several times a week, and finding Sukha has taken their practice even deeper.

“I feel calmer and more peaceful. Physically, I’m stronger, more flexible, and my balance and awareness have improved. I’m no longer bumping my head on the kitchen cabinet,” he jokes.
He especially loves classes with Tara, Ali, Cara, and Laura. “Each one challenges or nourishes me in a different way. The teachers at Sukha are so knowledgeable and kind. I feel like I’m in really good hands.”

His advice to beginners? “Don’t try to be perfect. This is your practice. Go at your own pace. As Cara says, a little bit of the pose is still the pose.”

Off the mat, Nathan is a middle school Social Studies teacher, a musician, and a writer. He’s finishing edits on his first book, How to Be a Dad, and you might catch him playing guitar at HopMonk’s open mic night. He and his wife Anna have five grown kids and continue making wellness a shared journey.

Liz first walked into Sukha in August, planning to attend just one class with a friend. That one class turned into three to five classes a week, and a transformation she never expected.

Liz said, “Yoga has changed my life. I have spent a lifetime, 55 years, hating my body, constantly shaming myself and being my own worst enemy. That lifetime narrative of “not good enough” has fundamentally shifted. It has transformed into, “Thank you, beautiful body, for all that you do for me. I will listen, love, and honor you.” This profound shift in self-perception and self-worth has come entirely through the practice I found at Sukha”.

At first, the practice felt physically hard. She struggled to move, stretch, and settle. But something about that first class felt right. She kept showing up and began to soften, grow stronger, and heal.

A longtime teacher, Liz now ends her busy days in a much more nourishing way. “Instead of scrolling my phone at night, I go to yoga. It gives me real rest and healing.”

Liz is a middle school drama teacher, a mom of two amazing adult kids, and a lover of nature, lake time, and dog walks in the Novato hills. She and her husband Cal now practice together, and she cannot imagine life without yoga.

“Sukha has become my home away from home. I feel calmer, more grounded, and more thankful than I can express.”

What’s your word for 2026?
We have a tradition at Sukha of choosing a word of the year.
Instead of picking a long list of resolutions that might be forgotten by February, selecting a single word can meaningfully shape the year ahead.

I like to take a few days to set an intention and stay open to receiving the word. Then, during meditation or in a yoga class, I allow it to arrive. It often feels as if the word is choosing me.

This practice has become a beautiful way to guide my year. The word reveals itself in new ways as the months unfold. I often create an image with the word and set it as my phone’s screensaver, so I’m reminded of it often.

Last year, my word was BEINGNESS. At first, it meant resting in presence without striving or needing to take action. Over time, it became about embodying new aspects of myself: Medicine Woman, Truth Speaker, Matrix Weaver.

This year, my word is OFFERING. It feels like the natural next step. From the aspects I’ve cultivated, I now feel called to offer them in service to something greater. I’m excited to keep exploring what it means to make offerings from a grounded place of wholeness.

This simple ritual has been transformative for me, and I always love hearing what words others are drawn to.

What’s your word this year?

I’d love to hear it.

💚

A note from Rachel ~ Beloved sangha, I’m grateful to share that the next chapter of my work in the world is unfolding as Radha Healing — an evolution still deeply rooted in yoga, and now expanding into Reiki, intuitive healing, and the written medicine of my Chemo Yogi journey on Substack .

After a year of profound transformation, I’m honored to return to the mat and to this beautiful community. I look forward to breathing, moving, and reconnecting with my fellow yogis, and to sharing the practices that continue to guide my own healing.
