Blast off! Buck scientists make the case for space as a model for accelerated aging.

Could astronauts serve as a unique model for human aging research? Manwaring-Mueller et al. review how spaceflight stressors, such as microgravity and radiation, accelerate biological aging pathways and could inform treatments for age-related diseases on Earth.

What happens when an oncologist and neurobiologist meet in a hallway? At the Buck the conversation leads to a breakthrough discovery for a rare kidney disease!

A unique collaboration between Buck Institute scientists studying breast cancer and Huntington’s disease shows that an orally administered drug prevents deadly calcium oxalate kidney stones, kidney failure, and early death in mice with Primary Hyperoxaluria Type 2

Healthy older MEN needed for another clinical trial at the Buck Institute. Eligible participants will receive up to $275. The MOVE Study explores how lifestyle habits and activity impact health as we age. Note: Participants must be between 65-80 years old and have a BMI between 19-35. We need more men to apply! We have room for 13 men still. Send them our way! Email: MOVE-study@buckinstitute.org or call 415-209-2072 if interested.

Another packed house today at the Buck at our monthly community seminar. Today’s seminar guest is Dr. Dean Ornish on Taking Control of Your Health. Dr. Ornish is one of the pioneers of taking a lifestyle-driven approach to heart disease and other chronic diseases. Dr. Ornish’s lifestyle medicine program remains the only one ever scientifically proven in peer-reviewed randomized trials to prevent and often reverse the progression of heart disease. He’ll discuss how it may also improve cognition and function in early-stage Alzheimer’s patients. Registration for our next seminar on May 6 opens today at noon: buckinstitute.org/events/lblseminars

New podcast dropped today!! Eric Verdin sits down with Dr. Cynthia Kenyon, a true pioneer in the field of geroscience and the Vice President of Aging Research at Calico Life Sciences. Dr. Kenyon recounts the revolutionary discovery that aging is not merely a process of "wearing out," but is a genetically regulated biological program. In 1993, Cynthia’s pioneering discovery that a single-gene mutation could double the lifespan of C. elegans roundworms while preserving function sparked an intensive study of the molecular biology of aging. The conversation explores how these findings translate from worms to mammals, the potential of drugs like Ozempic and Acarbose to extend human healthspan, and Dr. Kenyon’s proposal for a "World Healthspan Organization" to fund large-scale clinical trials for off-patent, low-cost compounds that currently lack traditional industry incentives.

Hot off the Buck Blog press! Faces of Discovery, a monthly installment to the Buck Blog, introduces the scientists unraveling the mysteries of aging. This month we're featuring Vineeta Tanwar PhD., a Senior Scientist in the Kapahi lab.

She translates aging biology into real-world clinical studies, driven by the belief that aging isn’t just something that happens to us, it’s something we can measure, understand, and maybe even outsmart.

A new monthly installment to the Buck Blog, introducing the scientists unraveling the mysteries of aging and pioneering ways to help us all live better longer

NEW BUCK PODCAST dropped today! What if the secret to a longer, healthier life isn’t found in a new supplement or a complex medical procedure, but in your cells' own innate ability to "take out the trash"? In this episode, host Brianna Stubbs is joined by Dr. Ana Maria Cuervo, a pioneer in the biology of aging and professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The conversation explores the critical roles of proteostasis—the cell's protein quality control factory—and autophagy, the body's natural recycling system. Dr. Cuervo explains her discovery of Chaperone-Mediated Autophagy (CMA) and how keeping these cellular "cleaning crews" active can help prevent neurodegenerative diseases like and . The episode concludes with actionable insights into how sleep, exercise, and meal timing can naturally jumpstart these longevity-promoting pathways.
