If you have diabetes, managing your blood sugar not only helps control your condition but also reduces your risk of developing gum disease. Research shows that diabetics are about three times more prone to periodontitis, a serious gum infection that can damage the soft tissue and bone supporting your teeth. A balanced approach to your diet and regular exercise can help your body use insulin more effectively. Keeping a close eye on your blood sugar levels ensures you understand how your lifestyle choices impact both your overall health and your smile. When you prioritize your wellness, you're not just protecting your body — you're also investing in a healthier, brighter smile.

When we think about staying healthy, we often focus on proper diet, exercise, and sleep. But there's one often overlooked part of the body - the gums.

The mouth is the gateway to our body. The gums are rich in blood vessels and closely connected to the immune system. When gums become inflamed due to plaque buildup or gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), inflammation can spread beyond the mouth.

Taking care of your mouth is an investment in your whole body.

Gum disease isn’t just an adult issue. Gingivitis, a mild form of periodontal disease, can affect children and adolescents too. In fact, early signs of gum issues can sometimes lead to more advanced forms, even in younger age groups. Chronic gingivitis causes the gums to swell, turn red, and bleed easily. When left untreated, it can pave the way for more serious conditions, including aggressive periodontitis that may lead to bone loss even if plaque buildup is minimal. Hormonal changes during puberty further increase a teen’s risk, as elevated levels of hormones like progesterone and estrogen boost blood circulation to the gums, making them more sensitive to irritants like plaque and food particles.

Early detection is key. Monitor your child’s oral health for signs like bleeding, swelling, or receding gums, and ensure that periodontal evaluations are part of routine checkups. If you need to schedule an appointment at Legacy Periodontics & Implants, call us: (248) 380-8020

Warning: gum recession won’t fix itself! If your gums are pulling away from your teeth, exposing the roots or causing sensitivity, a gum graft may be the solution. This procedure helps restore lost gum tissue, protect your teeth from further damage, and even improve the look of your smile.

Don’t wait until discomfort turns into a bigger issue. Schedule a consultation at Legacy Periodontics & Implants today: (248) 380-8020

Taking care of your body means taking care of your smile, too. Did you know that regular exercise isn’t just great for your heart and muscles — it benefits your gums, too? Staying active can lower your risk of gum disease by reducing inflammation and improving circulation, which helps keep your gums strong and healthy. Regular exercise also lowers the risk of diabetes and heart disease, which have both been linked to gum disease.
