Interesting and valid thoughts!
OB-GYNs say women should be ALLOWED more time in labor. ALLOWED? I am an adult woman. The very LANGUAGE used by ACOG reflects the lack of respect for women's autonomy that is pervasive in the birthing industry. And WOW -- how has it taken this long for ACOG to figure out what I've known as a midwife for 30 years? Lack of HUMILITY to ASK midwives what we do that works. Because in reality, there's a GREAT DEAL obstetricians could learn from the principles of midwifery care and physiologic, healthy birth. This would be an IMPORTANT STEP in creating a SEAMLESS maternity care system in which all women could safely choose their place of birth.
Of course many women are afraid to birth in hospitals -- we know that of the 34% of women having cesareans, many turned out to be unnecessary and happened because women were being rushed through their labor stages based on false, archaic guidelines (that were never applicable to "all women" in the first place).
We've got to learn to ask questions and start to demand that the polarization in place of birth and birth attendant be harmonized and that there be BEST PRACTICES for women (and babies) in all settings. I wonder if ACOG were to investigate the statistics, how many cesareans in the past decade would have turned out to be completely unnecessary? And how much needless discomfort, difficulty with breast feeding, infections, and other problems did they cause?
I know this is a painful thought for women who have had them, and of course, sometimes they are necessary -- but we have to look hard not just at unnecessary cesareans but the many other procedures which ACOG will eventually also back peddle on because we know they are not necessary! Women's health and safety really does depend on it.
