Conscious consideration for the horse is the best practice

🤔 Do you put a coat on your horse when YOU are feeling cold?

Ground-breaking research!

When it’s cold outside and you reach for your coat, or a few extra layers, how many of you reach for your horse’s rug/coat too?🧐

Researchers in Norway have been doing some GROUND-BREAKING research, studying the thermoregulatuon of horses and ponies in a series of experiments.

👀Looking at heat loss and gain throughout horses’ bodies AND THEIR FEET.

And there were some interesting results between SHOD and BARE horses too!

Due to the temperature gradient between the warmer hoof and the colder ground…

…they found that SHOD FEET, due to the METAL SHOE, more readily lost heat to the cold ground and appeared COLDER.

They also found that horses needed to be given the freedom of choice to cope with changing weather conditions.

So common practices such as RUGGING and SHOEING, when it comes to affecting the horse’s own abilities to regulate temperature, were NOT always the best option!

Spring is a time of re-birth. We have lost another soul to being reborn. Bentley was a perfect ranchhand. He was always the brawn that backed up his buddy Buckwheat. We will miss him so much. We have been very blessed to have this special soul in our lives. Happy Trails Bentley. Until we meet again!
