Tip of the Day: Sleep is one of the most overlooked factors in women’s health—and it directly impacts your hormones, mood, and cycle. Getting 7–8 hours of quality rest each night helps regulate hormones, improve energy levels, and support long-term reproductive health.

If your sleep is off, your hormones may be too.

Modern gynecology has a complex history.

The women often referred to as the “Mothers of Gynecology” — including Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey — were Black enslaved women who were subjected to repeated surgical experiments in the 1800s without consent or anesthesia by J. Marion Sims, who was later called the “Father of Gynecology.”

Their suffering and resilience contributed to early surgical techniques used in women’s health today.

At Best Care OB-GYN, we believe in acknowledging this history while committing to ethical, compassionate, and patient-centered care for every individual we serve. Informed consent, dignity, and respect are not optional — they are foundational.

Learn your history. Advocate for your health. Partner with providers who prioritize your voice.

Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr. was a pioneering Black surgical oncologist who became a national leader in addressing cancer disparities, including cervical cancer. He used his platform to advocate for early detection, expanded Pap smear access, and equitable cancer care for underserved communities.

His work helped shine a light on the reality that cervical cancer outcomes are closely tied to access, education, and preventive screening.

Cervical cancer is highly preventable with routine Pap smears and HPV testing. Continuing this legacy means prioritizing screening and early detection for every patient.

Postpartum is more than recovery. It is a full-body reset.

After birth, hormones shift rapidly, blood volume changes, sleep becomes fragmented, and your nervous system is adjusting while you care for a newborn. Mood swings, exhaustion, cramping, and emotional sensitivity are common — but persistent pain, heavy bleeding, or overwhelming sadness are not things you should ignore.

Your health after delivery deserves just as much attention as your pregnancy.

Schedule your postpartum checkup and talk openly about how you are feeling.

Yes, pregnancy can change your sleep sounds too.
Hormonal shifts and increased blood flow can cause nasal swelling and congestion, which may narrow the airway at night.

Weight gain, fluid retention, and sleeping on your back can also contribute, making snoring more common in the second or third trimester.

What may help includes sleeping on your side, elevating your head with pillows, staying well hydrated, and using a humidifier if the air is dry.
Snoring during pregnancy is common and often temporary, but mention it to your OB-GYN so we can rule out other concerns and support healthy rest.

Schedule a prenatal visit to talk through symptoms and sleep changes.

Fact or Myth: Pregnant Women Should Avoid Rice?

Rice is often misunderstood during pregnancy.
The truth is, rice can be part of a healthy pregnancy diet when eaten in proper portions and paired with protein, vegetables, and healthy fats.

Whole grains like brown rice provide energy, fiber, and essential nutrients that support both mom and baby.
What matters most is balance, portion size, and individual health needs.

If you have gestational diabetes, digestive concerns, or dietary questions, your OB-GYN can guide you safely.

Schedule a visit to get personalized pregnancy nutrition advice you can trust.

Did you know nearly 1 in 3 births in the United States are delivered by C-section?
According to CDC data, cesarean deliveries account for about 32 percent of all births nationwide.

While C-sections can be lifesaving when medically necessary, understanding your delivery options and risk factors is an important part of prenatal care. Every pregnancy is different, and informed decisions lead to safer outcomes for both parent and baby.

Talk with your OB-GYN early about your birth plan and what’s best for your pregnancy.

Schedule a visit with Best Care OB-GYN to discuss your personalized care plan.

Staying well-hydrated is essential for a healthy pregnancy. As your body supports both you and your baby, your fluid needs increase.

Drinking enough water helps:

* Support healthy blood flow and nutrient delivery to your baby
* Maintain amniotic fluid levels
* Reduce common pregnancy symptoms like constipation, swelling, and fatigue
* Prevent dehydration, which can increase the risk of headaches and contractions

Aim to sip water consistently throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty.

If you’re unsure how much water you need or are experiencing symptoms of dehydration, talk to your OB-GYN for personalized guidance.
