Nutley Family Service Bureau, Inc.

Nutley Family Service Bureau, Inc. Our mission is to strengthen the emotional and social well-being of individuals and families. Each year, hundreds of clients are served.

All of NFSB’s professional staff have a master’s degree in a human service field and are available for individual, family or group counseling. In addition, the staff is involved in a broad array of community outreach programs ranging from coping with adolescents and dealing with aging parents to helping individuals survive job loss. Staff members are trained to assess drug and alcohol abuse and fi

nd appropriate treatment. NFSB is under contract to the Township of Nutley to provide various services. Some clients come in on their own, while others are referred through clergy, police and employee assistance programs. Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on income, but no one is refused service because of inability to pay. The NFSB is run by a board of trustees, composed of 24 Nutley residents who volunteer their time to set policy and raise the necessary funds to ensure the continued existence of the agency. While some funding is derived from the United Way, major funding comes from client fees, corporate and municipal contracts, and through the generous donations of hundreds of individuals. Through the tireless efforts of the NFSB trustees, the Women’s Auxiliary, and other volunteers, we raise funds by holding events such as the annual charity ball, and through the operation of The Thrift Shop, and important on going source of funds for the NFSB.

Summertime Schedules
School’s out for summer, but before you ditch the structure and rules consider that children, especially those with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and other special needs, need a daily structure to stay on track.

You want to set your child up for summertime success and not lose all the progress he or she has made through the school year.

We recommend that you keep a schedule, be especially mindful of screen time and give your child an opportunity to get outside and play, run and get physical exercise.

If you are considering giving a child who takes ADHD medication a “medication holiday” during the summer, take some time to weigh the pros and cons.

Keep in mind that ADHD affects more than school performance.

Being able to follow rules in sports and getting along with other kids in day camp matters too.

Eating to support your Mental Wellness
We have all heard the expression, “you are what you eat,” we know this is true when it comes to your overall health, but it is especially true for your mental health.

Foods that are rich in vitamins and proteins are thought to play a role in the brain’s production of serotonin, dopamine, and other brain chemicals that contribute to and control moods.

Therefore, when the body has a deficiency in certain vitamins and proteins, it may be the cause of low moods and even contribute to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. It has been shown that gut microbes act as neurotransmitters in much the same way as serotonin and dopamine.

Avoid processed food as much as possible and try eating a diet rich in omega 3 proteins like salmon, nuts, and berries, and choose leafy green vegetables. Include healthy carbohydrates for energy.

The summer is a perfect time to try these healthier choices to boost your mood!

Summertime Mental Wellness
Your mental health does not go on vacation for the summer; in fact, it is a great time to increase your awareness of mental health needs.

Diet and exercise support overall wellbeing, be sure to keep your exercise plan but be mindful of the heat and sun choosing early morning or later in the day workouts.

If you are taking psychotropic medications, please follow the guidelines regarding heat, sun, and alcohol consumption while on medication.

Keep a schedule, even if it is more relaxed than usual.

Keep following us for more specific posts on summertime fun and safety.
