Since 1221, Florence has been home to Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. Born as the convent pharmacy of Dominican friars, it is regarded as the world’s oldest, continuously active in its historic premises. The neogothic counter shown here, carved in walnut in 1848, is part of the restoration that shaped the historic central hall, a project still preserved in the archives of Santa Maria Novella church.

Frescoes painted in 1848 by Paolino Sarti adorn the historic central hall of the apothecary, depicting the four continents as they were conventionally represented at the time. They celebrate both the Florentine legacy and the far-reaching origins of the ingredients used in its officinal preparations.
