🍼 Crawling Styles & What They Mean for Development! 🚼

Did you know there are many different ways babies crawl? While crawling is a key milestone, the way your baby moves can give clues about their muscle development. Let’s break it down!

🔹 Traditional Hands & Knees Crawling – This is the classic crawl, helping build core strength, coordination, and cross-body movement.
🔹 Army Crawling – Using the arms to pull forward while the belly stays on the floor. Great for upper body strength, but if persistent, it may signal weak core or leg muscles.
🔹 Scooting on the Bottom – Some babies prefer scooting instead of crawling. While cute, it may indicate weaker hip and core muscles if it is their primary mode of mobility.
🔹 One-Sided Crawling (Asymmetrical) – Crawling with one leg bent and the other extended could be a sign of muscle imbalance or tightness.
🔹 Bear Crawling – Walking on hands and feet; a normal progression to learn to come up to standing, but if your child skips crawling and goes straight to this, it may indicate a preference for extra sensory input or sensory avoidance to the knees being on the ground.

💡 Ways to Encourage Balanced Crawling:
✅ Tunnel Play – Encourages hands-and-knees crawling while building core strength.
✅ Obstacle Courses – Pillows, cushions, or crawling over low objects help activate both sides of the body.
✅ Tummy Time & Side Sitting – Strengthens core muscles and promotes even weight distribution.
✅ Crawling Races & Games – Make it fun by crawling together or adding toys to chase!

If your baby skips crawling altogether or shows persistent asymmetry, a developmental specialist or pediatric PT can help assess any underlying concerns.

"My Child Has Low Tone—What Does That Mean?" 🤔

If you’ve been told your child has low muscle tone (hypotonia) or high muscle tone (hypertonia), it can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry—I’m here to break it down!

🔹 Low Tone (Hypotonia) – This means muscles have less tension, making them feel soft or floppy. Kids with low tone may struggle with sitting upright, fatigue quickly, or seem “double-jointed.”
🔹 High Tone (Hypertonia) – This is when muscles stay too tight or stiff, making movement harder. Kids may appear rigid or have difficulty bending their arms or legs smoothly.

💡 Ways to Support Milestones in Kids with Low Tone:
✅ Core Strength Play – Activities like tummy time, crawling up inclines, and sitting on a therapy ball build stability.
✅ Weight-Bearing Activities – Climbing, push-offs, or wheelbarrow walks help strengthen muscles.
✅ Slow, Controlled Movements – Swinging, balance activities, and obstacle courses encourage muscle engagement.
✅ Compression & Deep Pressure – Wearing snug clothes, using weighted blankets, or applying gentle pressure can improve body awareness.

Every child is different, and early support makes a big difference! If you have concerns, a pediatric PT or OT can guide you through exercises to help your child gain strength and coordination.

Toe Walking: What It Means & How to Help! 👣

As a pediatric physical therapist, I often see kids who walk on their toes. While this can be typical in early walkers, persistent toe walking may signal underlying issues. Let’s break down the different types!

🔹 Idiopathic Toe Walking (Habitual) – No known medical cause; the child prefers walking on their toes.
🔹 Sensory-Related Toe Walking – Some kids toe-walk due to sensory preferences, either seeking extra input or avoiding certain textures.
🔹 Neurological Toe Walking – Conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy can cause increased muscle tightness, leading to toe walking.
🔹 Musculoskeletal Toe Walking – Tight calf muscles or structural differences in the legs/feet can contribute.

💡 DIY Exercises to Encourage Heel-to-Toe Walking:
✅ Walking Backward Down a Decline – Helps activate heel contact and stretch tight muscles.
✅ Wearing Flippers or Heavy Shoes – Promotes flat-foot walking by adding weight to the toes.
✅ Calf & Ankle Stretches – Daily stretching can improve flexibility.
✅ Animal Walks – Try "bear walks" or "penguin walks" for fun ways to strengthen the lower legs!

If toe walking continues past age 2 or limits movement, it’s worth a PT evaluation. Have you noticed toe walking in your child? Drop your questions below! ⬇️
