When playing with your child it’s our instinct to ask questions to get them to talk. And we might keep asking questions to try to keep the conversation going. But in reality, this limits their use of language. When we have conversations, we don’t only answer or ask questions! We use comments!

The “3:1 Rule” will help you reduce the number of questions you ask your child by making 3 statements for every 1 question. During bath time you might ask, “what should we do next?” then you can follow it up with 3 statements “Let’s wash your hair. We need soap. Rub it all around!”

Be sure to give your child time to answer the questions you ask and pause after each statement to give them a turn to talk.

If you’ve been thinking about getting your child help for their speech or language, now is a great time as we have openings available immediately! DM for details.

Word Play Speech Therapy is growing! Let’s all welcome Ms. Tara to the team!

Tara is a pediatric speech-language pathologist with 13 years of experience. She believes in child-led therapy that is enriched by play, literacy, meaningful communication, and connection.

During her previous time in the schools, Tara worked with preschool through 8th-grade students, addressing a wide range of communication and speech-language skills. This included articulation, phonology, receptive and expressive language, vocabulary, fluency, word retrieval, and social skills. For many years, she worked with students with complex communication needs to help them find their own voice as they addressed foundational communication skills. Tara had the privilege of collaborating with an incredible multidisciplinary team and often co-treated with other specialists. Tara has a passion for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Over the years, she has supported educational staff and families in creating individualized plans to foster communication opportunities for students using AAC, both at school and at home.

We are thrilled to have Tara’s expertise at Word Play Speech Therapy! She’s currently accepting new clients so don’t hesitate to reach out today.

After children acquire their first 50 words, they start to combine single words into phrases. Typically, a child’s average sentence length should be equal to their age (2 year olds use 2-word utterances and 3 year olds use 3-word utterances) until they are 5 years old.

But what if that’s not where they are? How do we encourage longer sentences? Use the +1 Routine.

Your goal is to model a phrase just one word longer in length than what your child says. This will help your child by exposing them to language just above their current level. Be sure to repeat the same words your child says and add just 1 more (to make more grammatically correct or colorful).

If you’ve been thinking about getting your child help for their speech or language, now is a great time as we have openings available immediately! DM for details.
