IPI’s Clinical Director of Home Nursing Karina Esquivel, BSN, RN, is running the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon with the Lurie Children’s Team on Sunday, October 12th! Karina is running to support Lurie patients and is dedicating her 26.2 miles to help raise awareness of cleft lip and palette, a cause that is near and dear to her heart.

As a nonprofit hospital, Lurie Children’s depends on donations. According to Lurie’s website, this is how your support can make a difference:

$100 is enough help make a child’s hospital stay a more positive experience with activities, supplies and toys.
$250 can provide patients with the support they need to thrive after lengthy hospital stays.
$500 supports clinical trials to help discover new or more effective treatment options.
$1000 helps train the next generation of specialists.

All donations are tax-deductible and will be acknowledged by Lurie Children’s Foundation.

Each year, hundreds of runners come together to run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon while supporting the patients and families at the hospital.

The entire Independence Plus team is wishing the happiest of birthdays to our wonderful princess, Lauren, who turned 30 last weekend and celebrated with family and friends at an open house bowling bash held near her home.

Lauren has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 and was only expected to live 3 or 4 years. However, with a strong will, a very supportive father, and a deep faith in God, she has managed to break through any expectations set for her while inspiring everyone she meets along the way.

Today we honor and observe Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. It marks the day on June 19th, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation, two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued it in 1863. Although it has been celebrated across this country for more than 150 years, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in 2021.

Independence Plus Respiratory Therapist Julie Ary, RRT, RCP, (pictured third from the left) joined with colleagues from the NorthShore Walk ALS Clinic Team to take part in the 2025 ALS United Greater Chicago Walk event held last Saturday, May 31st at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois.

Twice each month Independence Plus Respiratory Therapist’s like Julie join with local Care Services Coordinators to provide a Caregiver Boot Camp on behalf of ALS United Greater Chicago. This is a comprehensive, cost-free program designed to equip caregivers with essential knowledge, tools, and support.

The Caregiver Boot Camps are just one of the many ways ALS United Greater Chicago provides this special community with the resources they need to navigate their diagnosis.
