Were you taught to be a good patient?

Be polite. Be prepared. Don't take up too much time. Don't question the doctor. Be grateful for the appointment.

A lot of women were. And those lessons, while well-intentioned, can quietly work against us.

Research on self-silencing shows that when women consistently suppress their voice to maintain harmony, the health consequences are real. A 2022 University of Pittsburgh study found that women who self-silenced were 70% more likely to show signs of cardiovascular disease. Other studies have connected women's self-silencing to IBS, chronic fatigue, and cancer.

And the 2024 KFF Women's Health Survey found that 1 in 5 women said their provider ignored a direct request or question they asked.

We were taught to be good patients. But sometimes, being a "good patient" means leaving without the answers we came for.

Health literacy isn't just knowing your options. It's believing you have the right to ask about them.

Sometimes improving health literacy means redefining what it means to be a good patient.

What's one thing you wish you had felt more confident saying to a provider?

Before she ever walks into the doctor's office, she has already been working.

She researched her symptoms at 11 pm. She compared her experience to her sister's, her coworker's, and a stranger's post in a Facebook group. She weighed the risks. She managed her fear. She wrote down questions, and then wondered if they were worth asking.

That is not anxiety. That is invisible labor.

Research confirms that women carry a disproportionate share of cognitive labor, the hidden mental work of planning, decision-making, and monitoring, and that this extends directly into how they navigate health information.

And most of the time, none of that work is acknowledged when she finally sits down across from her provider.

As a Health Literacy Strategist, this is one of the gaps I focus on: the distance between the work women do before the appointment and the support they receive during it.

You did the work to get there. You deserve a system and a conversation that meets you where you are.

Have you ever shown up to an appointment fully prepared and still left feeling like something was missed?

Many women don't struggle because they lack information.

They struggle because they don't always feel confident asking questions.

Health literacy is not just understanding. It's decision confidence.

You deserve to understand what is happening in your body. You deserve to ask for clarity. You deserve to feel confident making health decisions.

Now that my doctoral research is complete, I'm excited to share more of this work as a Health Literacy Strategist, helping women strengthen their health voice.

What's one question you wish you had asked at a medical appointment? Let me know in the comments.

Some seasons stretch us in ways we didn’t ask for. The hard days, the unexpected detours, the moments that knock the wind out of us, they have a way of shining a light on what we’ve been ignoring.

This quote reminds me that discomfort isn’t always a setback. Sometimes it’s an invitation. An invitation to slow down. To check in with our bodies. To notice the stress we’ve normalized, the rest we’ve postponed, the feelings we’ve pushed aside.

Wellness isn’t just green smoothies and step counts. It’s awareness. It’s listening when your mind is tired, when your body is whispering before it starts shouting. It’s giving yourself permission to adjust, reset, and choose differently.

If this season feels heavy, maybe it’s also helping you see what needs care. And that awareness? That’s the beginning of healing

One of the best parts about being part of a local community-supported agriculture program (CSA) is the surprise factor. Every two weeks, from May through October, I swing by the It Takes a Village Community Farm to pick up a fresh assortment of locally grown produce. Most of the time, I’m greeted by familiar favorites, but every now and then, I discover something completely new....
