Meet Duo Dog Drake! 🐾

We recently welcomed a new teammate to our Park Ridge Campus: Drake, a specially trained facility dog who is already making a meaningful difference in the lives of pediatric patients, their families and our teammates. Drake, a 2-year-old labrador retriever, is our very first 4-legged teammate – bringing a new dimension of care to ACH. As a facility dog, he is embedded in the hospital’s daily operations and works alongside clinical staff five days a week to support pediatric patients through their medical journeys.

Drake’s arrival marks the launch of our facility dog program, made possible through a grant from the Dunkin' Joy In Childhood Foundation – an organization dedicated to providing the simple joys of childhood to kids battling hunger or illness. Through their national Dogs for Joyā„¢ program, Drake’s ongoing care and expenses are fully covered.

Drake comes to us through a partnership with Duo, a nonprofit organization based in St. Louis that specializes in training facility dogs. Duo Dogs assigns working facility dogs at no cost to the client, and their expertise ensures that Drake is uniquely prepared to serve patients and families.

Thanks to the generosity of the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation and the specialized training and partnership with Duo Dogs, we can now offer the healing comfort of a facility dog to patients and families. Together, their partnership has made Drake’s arrival – and his impact – possible.

In support of Advocate Children’s Hospital’s ā€œReach Out and Readā€ program, Chicago Cubs pitcher Jordan Wicks stopped by our Park Ridge campus to read one of his favorite children’s books to our patients. šŸ“š

The ā€œReach Out and Readā€ program promotes early childhood literacy by partnering with primary care clinicians to integrate reading into routine pediatric visits. The program raises awareness of the positive role early literacy plays in a child’s development.

Thanks for joining us, Jordan! 🫶

Two days after her 8th birthday, Rylie, nickname ā€œHopie,ā€ was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer: Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT). Doctors gave her just a 7% chance of surviving the year.

From day one, Hopie’s family chose to protect her light. No tears, no fear — only love, strength, and fierce determination. And Hopie fought with everything she had.

She endured over a dozen rounds of chemo, two stem cell transplants, more than 25 procedures and surgeries, three cancer diagnoses and countless setbacks — and countless comebacks.

Through it all, Hopie never stopped inspiring. Her courage was quiet but mighty. Her love, unwavering. Her spirit, unbreakable. Though her body grew tired, Hopie never lost her battle.

She won — with every smile, every step, every moment of hope.

In her memory, Hopie’s mom founded Hope for Warriors, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families facing pediatric cancer. They recently held their second annual event — a celebration of strength, love, and the legacy of a little girl who never stopped fighting.

Proceeds from this event benefit the Child Life Program at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge — helping bring comfort, joy and healing to children and families facing medical challenges.

The 20th annual Cubs Charities Race to Wrigley Charity 5K offered runners the chance to allocate personal fundraising dollars to support developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Advocate Children’s Hospital.

Larisa, a nurse practitioner in developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Advocate Children’s Hospital, supported her team by running the race this year. But for Larisa, supporting the developmental and behavioral pediatrics program goes beyond her career. Larisa shares the impact this program has made on her and her family:

ā€œWhen my son Julian was diagnosed with autism and other developmental conditions at 2.5 years old, my world shifted. Julian was first seen at Advocate Children’s Hospital, where he was given his diagnoses by clinicians, including Dr. Weedon, who I have the honor of working with now. Julian has continued to receive therapies through Advocate Children’s Hospital that have directly contributed to his growth.

When he was first diagnosed, I found myself wanting to learn everything I could about how to help him. I was deeply moved by the dedication and expertise of his care team. Their impact inspired me both personally and professionally, so I went back to school to become a nurse practitioner. I had the opportunity to complete clinical hours with Dr. Weedon, and I knew right away that this is where I belong.

Now, I have the unique honor of working with families like mine. I understand what it’s like to sit on the other side of the table, full of questions and fear for the future. It is truly a privilege to provide diagnoses and clinical recommendations that contribute to the patients' developmental growth, as well as to support and empower families on their own unique journeys.

Today, Julian is almost 10 years old. He speaks in full sentences, including sharing his vast knowledge about his topics of interest. He is thriving in school, actively participating in therapies and extracurriculars, and enjoying his childhood with his 2 brothers. Witnessing my own children grow and interact with the world has only deepened my commitment to my 2 most important roles – mother and clinician.ā€
