Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we pause to honor the strength, voices, and futures of women and girls in our community and around the world. This work is both global and deeply local, and we’re reminded that change often begins with the courage of young people who choose to speak up.
Earlier this year, Carey Carlock and Norah Scott served as judges for the Youth Voice Award through Sarah's Inn, an organization that has been a pillar of support, safety, and advocacy for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence in Oak Park and the surrounding area. The young award recipients shared powerful stories and creative work that reflected their commitment to healthy relationships, justice, and community care.
Sharing moments from that day feels especially meaningful now. These youth voices remind us that prevention and healing grow stronger when we create space for honesty, education, and collective responsibility. We’re grateful for Sarah’s Inn, for the young leaders who are already shaping a safer future, and for every advocate working to ensure that women and girls can live free from violence.
If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, Sarah’s Inn 24-hour crisis lines are available at 708-386-4225 (phone) and 708-669-6149 (text).
