GLP1RAs are studied and intended to be used ALONGSIDE diet and lifestyle changes. This is not only to improve efficacy, but also to prevent side effects, prevent muscle mass loss, and improve long-term weight maintenance.
Amy Carson, RD with over a decade of weight management experience, works with patients on GLP1RAs weekly and sees a lot of people be successful and feel great. However, she also sees plenty of mistakes, which when adjusted, leave patients able to continue the medications AND get the most benefit without side effects.
1) Not eating enough calories. Our bodies NEED calories for energy. Eating less calories also means eating less macro and micronutrients, leading to fatigue, hair loss, and other deficiencies.
2) Not adjusting the consistency and timing of their food to prevent side effects. Simple changes such as blending or cooking fibers, eating small frequent meals, and stopping eating 3 hours before bed can make a huge difference for certain gastrointestinal side effects.
3) Not eating enough protein, relying too heavily on protein supplements. It is definitely okay to use supplements to help you reach the high protein goals needed (& spread out throughout the day), but you need a variety of protein to absorb all the different nutrients they have to offer.
4) Not strength training. This one is non-negotiable, as it's imperative to maintain muscle mass in order to not put your metabolism in the gutter over time. You don't have to become a bodybuilder, but moving weights, even just your body weight, should not be skipped.
