Whats your first thought when you have pain?

If pain had a voice, what would it be saying?

How do you typically cope with pain?

These are some of my first questions to my clients as it gives me insight into their reaction to and story surrounding pain.

These questions are some of the doorways that lead one to the emotional, psychological, and physical healing required for true recovery from chronic and persistent pain.

I had an excellent time at Community Health and Wellness Fair.

Leave a comment on your answers to these questions!

Space is allowing a shift to occur: from fear to acceptance.

This is a reminder to pause, breathe, and meet anything which arises with curiosity and kindness.

You’re not stuck. You’re just in the in-between, the crossing.

Did Cavemen Need Physical Therapy?

Ever wonder if our ancient ancestors ever needed physical therapy? Probably not. Why? Their way of life was basically an ongoing workout. They didn't spend hours hunched over desks or glued to screens. Instead, they were active, mobile, and constantly moving in ways that naturally strengthened their bodies.

Our prehistoric ancestors weren't hitting the gym, but they were climbing, lifting, running, crouching—doing all sorts of movements that we now know are great for building functional strength. Their day-to-day life forced them into a variety of postures and positions that kept them strong, mobile, and (for the most part) pain-free.

Why Cavemen Didn't Need Physical Therapy

Because of this constant movement and variability, they likely avoided the repetitive strain and postural issues we face today. Cavemen didn't spend all day sitting, and if they did, they were probably sitting in deep squats or other active positions that kept their muscles engaged. No need for ergonomic chairs or standing desks here!

In contrast, modern life often forces us into static positions that we don't move from for hours on end. I don't believe there is a 'bad posture', but when we spend 8 hours (or more) a day in one position, our bodies might tell us about it—whether we're sitting in front of a computer, driving long distances, or spending too much time on the couch.

Training Ourselves for the Modern World

In a way, we can learn a lot from our ancient ancestors. Our bodies thrive when they're challenged by different movements and positions. Today, we tend to get stuck in the same positions or train in a similar fashion, which can lead to muscle imbalances, stiffness, and, eventually, pain. But that doesn't mean we're doomed!

Just like cavemen and cavewomen, we can train our bodies to stay strong and balanced. Incorporating a variety of movements into your routine—like strength training, stretching, and mobility exercises—is key to building resilience and preventing injury. Movement variability is crucial here. It's not just about doing the same exercise over and over again, but about challenging your body in different ways to ensure all your muscles and joints get the attention they need.

But if you are dealing with pain…

If those nagging pains just won't go away, or you feel like you need a little extra help, that's where we come in. Suppose you're dealing with pain, numbness, or stiffness that just won't go away. In that case, physical therapy can be a game-changer, Mindful Motion Physical Therapy can help you implement these strategies to not only reduce your pain but make you more resilient for the future.

Don't wait until things get worse—let's get started on getting you back to moving like a caveman (minus the loincloth, unless that's your thing).

Frustration of past failed treatments can lead to a belief that there is nothing to be done.

Meet Jeff.

Jeff came to me after flaring his back up on July 4th weekend. His back pain has been coming and going for the past couple of years, but was especially bad this time – it simply wasn’t going away!

He couldn’t sit for longer than 4-5 minutes without significant pain in his back which went down his leg. He couldn’t stand for much longer, either.

He needed to be ready for an upcoming conference which he is attending in early August and was worried about if he would be able to make it.

After just two sessions, Jeff can sit until his heart desires, is moving and working out relatively pain-free.

We’re not done yet though. At MMPT, we make sure that you are set up for the future with a dynamic program that sets you up to succeed in the future and become more resilient to re-injury.

It’s about learning then implementing.

Do you have a story which is similar to Jeff’s? Is your pain up and down with no known course of how to take care of it?

If so, reach out and let’s see if I can help get you back on track, more confident than ever.

Let’s set the record straight.

Just because your back pain has been going on for a long time doesn’t mean you’re damaged or predict that it will remain that way.

Rest actually might be keeping you in the same cycle of sensitivity and pain. Graduated movement is key to returning to where you want to be.

MRIs are not predictive of pain severity, disability, or lasting pain.

I find myself saying these things a lot in my practice, just thought I’d share.

If you have questions about any of the above, shoot me a DM and ask away.

In the meantime... Keep going.

Is a candle dangerous?

Absolutely not! But if your nervous system is too sensitive, well, it can think that the candle being lit is a fire.

Don’t stop, drop and roll or call 911, just understand that this is a normal, evolutionarily helpful process that has gotten out of control in our bodies.

There’s hope.

You have the ability to change this sensitive alarm system and get back to doing the things you love and not being guided by pain.

Have questions? DM me ‘candle’ for more information.

In the meantime... Keep going.

Our nervous system learns patterns and reacts accordingly.

These patterns can arise due to physical or emotional trauma and are meant to protect us.

The result of these learned patterns and subsequent habit formation by the nervous system might explain a lot of your symptoms.

Maybe you experience chronic tension in a part of your body (maybe a part of the body which was previously injured.)

Maybe you experience stress and feel sick to your stomach.

Maybe your symptoms are related to previous physical or emotional trauma, and learned patterns of reaction from this.

The list can go on.

The point is that it’s important to first become aware of these patterns and to be curious about them, not fearful or deny them.

They’re real and can be treated.

The more information you know and the more tools in your tool belt you have to work with and break these patterns, the better equipped you are to return to a state of wellbeing.

Reach out for more information.

In the meantime, keep going.

Hello all!

My name is Chris Voirin and I’m excited you’re here! Here’s a little bit about me.

I am a chronic pain physical therapist and therapeutic pain specialist and my passion is helping those who have struggled with chronic back pain and are struggling to live their lives to the fullest.

My philosophy in helping people is simple: Identify the areas in your life which might be contributing to your chronic pain and develop meaningful and actionable habits around them.

I do this by taking the time and listening to your story. It’s about you, not the diagnoses which have been put on you or the what the x-rays say.

We work together to develop an understanding of pain to demystify what’s happening, taking time to consider the relationship you might have to pain and how mindfulness can assist, and return to meaningful movement to achieve your goals.

I’m all about open communication and collaboration; this is why I want to make sure I am communicating with your health team (you MD, your therapist, etc.) to be on the same page and better serve you!

There are often overlooked causes to chronic pain and therefore, we will leave no stone unturned to get you back on track.

I currently work in a space at Grace Therapy Wellness Center in Oak Park, IL and can work with anyone experiencing chronic pain, message me for more details!

I try to stay busy when I’m not working… My other passions are:

Photography I like trying to capture the uniqueness of the space that I’m in📸
Getting outside to hike and camp (boy, do I have some stories to tell) 🥾🗻
Helping out on my family’s tree farm🌳🌳
Cooking👨‍🍳
Spending time with my 3 nephews (I’m the cool uncle)🤣

I would love to hear from you, send me a DM to connect or tell me something about yourself in the comments!
