📚 Staff Training Highlight 📚

Last week, our Children's Services team had the opportunity to participate in an incredibly valuable training about the early detection of Cerebral Palsy. We were grateful to welcome Jennifer de la Rosa, MOT, OTR/L, BCP and Mary Kay Heldman, MSW, LSW, LISW-S from Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, who shared their expertise and insights with our staff.

This training has already made an impact—we’ve made a referral to their Early Motor Development Clinic and are excited to continue building this partnership to better support the children and families we serve.
Thank you to Jennifer and Mary Kay for an engaging and informative presentation. We look forward to collaborating more in the future!

Occupational Therapist Abigail Koning is sharing her three favorite items from our Equipment Lending Library! Please consult with your Oak Leyden Therapist to see if these or other items from our library are the right fit for your family.

Oak Leyden’s Children’s Services now offers an Equipment Lending Library of over 450 items that support your child’s growth and development! We know that specialized equipment can be expensive for families, and kids seemingly grow out of toys as soon as you acquire them, so we’re thrilled to be able to offer this unique service. Items range from large equipment and adaptive equipment to toys and books and small eating utensils you can trial and keep. Thank you to Special Kids Foundation, The Opler Foundation, and River Forest Township, our partners in bringing this vision to life!

Mighty Oak 2026 is coming fast!

On Thursday, April 23rd, join over 200 of Oak Leyden's closest supporters, friends, and community members to celebrate 70 years of pursuing our mission. We've got a wonderful venue in Riverside Golf Club, some inspiring speakers, a Live AND Silent Auction, and Chicago's premier 80's and 90's cover band--Sixteen Candles. All we need is you. Tickets are only $150 a head (just try to go out for a good dinner with an open bar and a great band for less than that!), with all proceeds supporting our efforts to help individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Questions? Contact Jim at jmichael@oak-leyden.org for answers!

Oak Leyden’s Children’s Services, in partnership with Collaboration for Early Childhood, had the pleasure of hosting Gina Musielski of Star Net Region II and VI last night. Gina spoke to families about what happens when a child ages out of Early Intervention and transitions into school age.

While these services of the state (EI, special ed in schools) are designed to support each individual child, the systems that provide them can be complex and confusing! It’s our pleasure to walk along side our families as they navigate it all and assist them in any way we can. We hope this training shed some light on the transition their kids are approaching!

Let us know in the comments below if there are any topics you’d be interested in learning more about! We’re looking to host more trainings in the near future.

We know it’s cold and flu season, but these sneeze games are nothing but fun! Lorenzo loves to show off his expressive speech gains in this speech routine that we lovingly call the sneeze game. It’s a very motivating game full of suspense and anticipation to encourage using words to request more or “again” in Lorenzo’s case!

Good morning, and Welcome Back after the holiday weekend! Last week, we shared that Oak Leyden was thrilled to welcome our new Speech Therapist Chloe Latka to our team. As a result, we have more speech therapy sessions available for children ages 3-12! Your child may benefit from speech-language services if they have difficulty with their speech sounds, language, stuttering, or social skills.

No referral is needed! Link in bio for our self-referral form.

✨ We had so much fun at last week’s Valentine Theme Night! ❤️

Our friends enjoyed exploring creative activities together—here, one of our kiddos is painting a heart shaped ice cube on one of our light tables. 🎨❄️

Our monthly theme nights are such a great way for families to connect and kids to enjoy new play experiences with peers! ✨💕

Have a great Valentine's Day this weekend, everyone!
