Mariela Cortes, APN, CNM, is a board-certified nurse midwife at West Suburban Medical Center. She earned her master’s degree in nursing from Frontier Nursing University. Growing up in Brighton Park, she developed a strong desire to give back to her community. Fluent in Spanish, Mariela is committed to providing compassionate, culturally responsive care.

Women’s health is a passion close to her heart. As a midwife, she finds immense fulfillment in supporting women through some of their most vulnerable moments—offering guidance, comfort, and care throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond. For her, midwifery is more than a profession; it’s a calling that brings both joy and purpose.

Outside of healthcare, Mariela enjoys traveling and exploring different cultures—experiences that broaden her perspective and enrich her life. She also treasures quality time with her three children and family, which keeps her grounded and inspired in both her personal and professional journey.

Cardiovascular disease can take many forms. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women; one person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease.

A heart-healthy population is what we strive for at Resilience Healthcare, supported by our cardiologists, Dr. Amjad Sheikh at Weiss Memorial Hospital and Dr. Sabah Khan at West Suburban Medical Center.

February was American Heart Month, and the Resilience team took part in the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day to help raise awareness for heart disease.

Our Resilience Healthcare PT team celebrates National Physical Therapy Month 2024!

National Physical Therapy Month is celebrated in October to recognize the benefits of physical therapy and the work of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students. The PTs, PTAs, and student physical therapists at Resilience see patients in the acute care hospitals, the post-acute rehab units at Weiss Memorial Hospital and West Suburban Medical Center, and also the outpatient therapy clinics at Weiss and the River Forest Medical Campus. The profession focuses on movement patterns, exercises, and education to help people recover from injuries or health events and learn to manage their ongoing recovery independently.

Our Mother and Baby Unit at West Suburban Medical Center is embarking on a new chapter, with a nationally recognized team of experienced OBGYNs providing all labor and delivery care 24x7. This provides the community access to a higher quality of care as we advance our mission to reduce the unacceptably high maternal and infant mortality rates in Black and Brown families. New and expectant mothers who come to West Suburban can expect to receive the highest quality care from experts in this field who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

We are grateful to the nurse midwives at PCC who have provided care in this department for a number of years and remain hopeful they will become a part of this new chapter. Our offer to have PCC midwives work with our highly trained OBGYNs to continue to provide care stands and we are hopeful they will accept.

As we move forward, please know labor and delivery services at West Suburban Medical Center will continue uninterrupted with higher quality care than ever before. Come in today for the safe and compassionate care you deserve.
