Summer is around the corner. YAY!

But that can also mean that school is ending. Sometimes that's exciting and sometimes that creates a lot of anxiety for our kids because they don't have the ability to predict or visualize or
process what the transition into summer break will look like.
Let's be honest - this is a REALLY big transition!

So depending on where your child is can determine whether they're excited that school is ending or they're having maybe some behaviors, some anxiety, and even some new challenges that are coming into the transition out of school.

Whether your child is excited OR anxious, here are a couple of things that you can do to help them transition into summer break!

🌞 Give them a visual understanding of what to anticipate such as a schedule. You may start this weeks leading up to school ending so they can see exactly when school is going to end.
And then what's the big picture? What does the summer look like? What trips do you have planned? What events do you have? What activities can they anticipate? These are important things
to lay out and show when it's going happen in a big picture visual schedule.

*reminder: this should be age appropriate so you may need to do one week at a time versus an entire month.

🌞 Give your child VISUAL aids. Show them pictures of who is coming, where you will go, etc. You can even print these pictures and put them into your visual schedule so that it's providing
even more visual aid to help them be able to process and predict what summer break will be like!

When we have more predictability, anxiety comes down. Stress is alleviated in our systems and we are better able to handle things that are coming in the future.

So try these two tips as you transition into summer break and follow us for more support.

Bedtime is so often a time during the day that we can see some challenges with parents working with their kids! The winding down, getting ready to go to sleep, getting their body ready to rest and restore. 😴

This can be a time where we actually see some increased activity, maybe even anxiety, increased hyperactivity and excitement. We can even be met with a lot of defiance or resistance on
doing the things we need to do to get to bed!

Here are three easy tips to try and help our child be able to unwind their brain, be settled in their nervous system to make bedtime a little easier!

1⃣ Decrease a lot of bright lights or screen time at least two hours before bedtime. Lights stimulate the pineal gland in our brain and can impact our ability to start making melatonin and start
that sleep rhythm of getting our bodies prepped and ready for bed.

2⃣ Create a routine or pegs that help set up predictability on what it looks like going to bed. This may be things that you do like brushing your teeth, getting your pajamas on, and then reading a
story. Make sure there's consistency and predictability, and that these pegs are the same every night to help your child.

3⃣ Give even more predictability by drawing pictures of bedtime. Literally taking a piece of paper, drawing stick figures of mom or dad, putting little Johnny in bed. Show him where he's going
to sleep, where his stuffed animal is, where are mom and dad going to go once he's asleep in his bed and then what's going to happen during the night and then what's going to happen in the
morning. This kind of comic strip, Brain Blossom story is super helpful in helping give kids visualization.

Try these three things and watch as the bedtime resistance fades away!

As an adult, we can understand that there are different stressors out in the world and when we're dealing with a lot of stress, we FEEL it.

We know what stress feels like.

We feel it in our bodies. We may even notice it in our brain, our ability to think clearly, even in our own behaviors. But what about for your child? When kids are stressed, it can look very
different.

As a parent you might notice:
➡ an INCREASE in "naughty" behaviors
➡ an INCREASE in outbursts, emotions or aggression towards siblings
➡ an INCREASE in accidents

These can all be signs of increased stress for your child.
When you are seeing an increase or even a new behavior pop up, stop, take a step back and evaluate all the different variables that are going on in your kid's life that may have shifted,
changed, or increased that could be adding an increased amount of stress on them.

Remember, stress comes in three forms: physical, chemical and emotional. So be sure to consider all three!

Have you ever been super excited as a parent to take your kid and go do a REALLY fun activity? You've spent hours planning the perfect hike, packed the most delicious & nutritious snacks
and have loaded the car - only to hear "I don't want to go"

😤 Your initial feeling might be confusion and frustration BUT take a second to: PAUSE

Take a deep breath

Put on your brain based lens

Here are three possibilities why your kid is giving you some pushback and is trying to feel in control of the situation.

1⃣ They may not actually be able to create the visualization to process what you're asking them to do such as a new hike. They're having a hard time knowing what that looks like.
Because they're not there yet in their ability to visualize what you're asking them to do - they don't want to do it.

2⃣ They may also be feeling out of control and maybe some increased stress. When we feel like our world is overwhelming, when we feel stressed, we're going to try to decrease the
complexity of our world. Your child saying "no" to this fun, new adventure is their way of decreasing the complexity of their world.

3⃣ Your kid may be experiencing more stress than you realize.Take a step back and look through a brain based lens to see what's going on in your child's life right now.Maybe there's a
transition with school. Maybe they're not sleeping very well.

Maybe we're not feeling well. Maybe we have less predictability.
When you have a child that's giving you a lot of pushback, step back to see maybe it's not that they're just being naughty and saying no but there may be something else going on.

Keep following us for more tips on how to get that kid to go on a hike!

You are so excited to see your child after they've been at school all day and the questions start pouring out: “How was school? What did you do? What was your favorite part?”

And your child replies "I don't know”.

We've all been there, right? There's a reason your child says "I don't know".

We are asking kids these questions when they are tired, potentially hungry, they've had a long day of academic demands, social demands, and environmental demands.

THEN we are asking them to create more visualization, to be able to create the images in their head, and think back through their day (all the things they did), and to be able to then verbally
process those and tell us.

So it might not be that your child truly does not know, they just might need a little time at home to recover and relax from school BEFORE they are able to answer your question.

Try this at school pickup today! Give your child the opportunity to recharge and THEN ask about their day.

Let us know how it goes!
