Bedtime is so often a time during the day that we can see some challenges with parents working with their kids! The winding down, getting ready to go to sleep, getting their body ready to rest and restore. 😴
This can be a time where we actually see some increased activity, maybe even anxiety, increased hyperactivity and excitement. We can even be met with a lot of defiance or resistance on
doing the things we need to do to get to bed!
Here are three easy tips to try and help our child be able to unwind their brain, be settled in their nervous system to make bedtime a little easier!
1⃣ Decrease a lot of bright lights or screen time at least two hours before bedtime. Lights stimulate the pineal gland in our brain and can impact our ability to start making melatonin and start
that sleep rhythm of getting our bodies prepped and ready for bed.
2⃣ Create a routine or pegs that help set up predictability on what it looks like going to bed. This may be things that you do like brushing your teeth, getting your pajamas on, and then reading a
story. Make sure there's consistency and predictability, and that these pegs are the same every night to help your child.
3⃣ Give even more predictability by drawing pictures of bedtime. Literally taking a piece of paper, drawing stick figures of mom or dad, putting little Johnny in bed. Show him where he's going
to sleep, where his stuffed animal is, where are mom and dad going to go once he's asleep in his bed and then what's going to happen during the night and then what's going to happen in the
morning. This kind of comic strip, Brain Blossom story is super helpful in helping give kids visualization.
Try these three things and watch as the bedtime resistance fades away!
