I got a text yesterday about Prince’s death while I was with my parents – they are in their 70’s, I’m 44. When iconic people die they remind us of who we were when we first loved them, and when I first loved Prince, I was young.
I don’t really worry about being old, but I know for sure I’m no longer young.
I was 13, it was 31 years ago that I was consumed by MTV and Purple Rain, and while I continued to love him, those were the days. And when I heard the news yesterday, the girl from those days was so sad.
Losing him takes me off autopilot and reminds me where I really am in life – and while I wouldn’t change a thing, there is still some shock value in remembering my age.
I think that’s why people are so devastated. He can’t be gone, because we are still here, and we are supposed to continue growing up together.
That’s what these iconic people do, they wake us up. They make us feel all those things we used to feel, we are forced to remember what was, and take inventory of what is.
Prince is a symbol (literally and emotionally…and while I remember laughing a bit at his transformation into a symbol, I now fully understand his point…again, age teaches). He’s a symbol of our generation, several generations, and when these people (David Bowie, Michael Jackson) leave us, a part of us is stunned by present time.
Yet present time is it, that’s the only deal in town. And I think about who these people will be for my children, my oldest daughter is the same age I was when I first heard Prince.
And I am reminded of how powerful this time is for her.
And dig if you will, how interesting and amazing life has been so far.

I often hear people discouraged about the themes that come up in their therapy over and over again. This helps understand how this does not reflect a lack of progress.
