🌟 Tip Tuesday: Celebrating Autism Awareness Month & Understanding Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) 🌟
This month, we’re celebrating Autism Awareness Month and shining a light on Gestalt Language Processing (GLP)—a unique way some children learn language. 💛
💡 What it looks like:
•Children with GLP may repeat whole phrases or “scripts” from TV shows, movies, books, or conversations.
•These scripts aren’t just “copying”—they’re building blocks for communication.
•Over time, these chunks can break down into smaller pieces, helping your child create their own sentences.
✨ How to support communication:
1.)Follow their lead: If they repeat a phrase, respond naturally and expand it slightly.
2.)Model flexible scripts: Use familiar phrases but change small parts—like swapping words or endings—to show language can bend and grow.
3.)Reduce questions: Instead of quizzing, comment or describe what you see to keep communication flowing naturally.
4.)Celebrate every attempt: Every repeated phrase or script is a step toward their own language—even if it’s from a TV show!
💡 Important note: Not all children with GLP are autistic, and not all autistic children use GLP. It’s just one way some brains process language.
🌱 Remember: With patience, listening, and playful interaction, these “scripts” can blossom into spontaneous, meaningful communication.
