Schizophrenia, which affects about 24 million people worldwide, is often called one of the most devastating mental illnesses because it strikes young adults and can disrupt the course of their lives.
The disorder is marked by hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking, making it hard for people to study, work, or maintain relationships. Experts say genetics, brain development, trauma, and drug use can increase risk, though causes remain unclear.
While there is no cure, medication and therapy can help manage symptoms, and many patients are able to live independently.
