Knollcrest Funeral Home was established in 1989. When Robert Van Staalduinen and his family purchased the land where the funeral home is today, there were trees, an old farmhouse, and a barn. Robert and his wife Elaine built and decorated the funeral home with the goal of creating a comfortable, home-like place where people could come during a difficult time.

WE'RE READY NO MATTER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCE LEADS YOU HERE

Being an experienced professional Funeral Director, you learn to maintain a sense of readiness for whatever situation may arise. Loss is always a tragedy for loved ones. No matter the circumstance, no one is truly completely ready for when the time when a death of a loved one occurs. Some situations do bring a greater sense of tragedy. Sudden deaths, younger people, and many other cases where a loss is completely unexpected.

"You must listen carefully to the families" is how Eric Shoesmith describes his approach at Knollcrest and Steuerle Chapel, adding "they are feeling something they've likely never felt before, and acknowledging those feelings offer them a great deal of comfort.". Experience means a lot in this process. Even in grief...plans must be made. Plenty of logistical things must be tended to. There are time constraints and many moving parts for a funeral director and a family making arrangements. "No matter how many balls are up in the air, we've done this before many times and we know how handle every detail. Eric shares what he believes every Funeral Director needs to learn early in their career, "if you don't give loved ones time to express their grief and their concerns at the very outset, you can't perform this ministry at the highest level".

The family member making the arrangements often must be "the rock" for their family. Becoming "the rock" starts with dealing with their own grief and loss first, before being capable of shouldering the grief of others. Eric will be the first to tell you that no matter how difficult it may be to help shepherd families through this part of the process, it may be the most rewarding gift too, knowing you've helped loved ones through that valley. The best Directors know this and put it in practice.
