Dr. Vence is proud to support our nation’s heroes by attending a charity event for SOC-F, an organization dedicated to providing life-changing care for active and retired U.S. Special Operations Forces and their families. SOC-F addresses critical gaps in healthcare, family support, and behavioral health treatments, and innovative therapies. While the outcome from the journey was challenging, it was a case of exemplary interdisciplinary coordination at its finest. This patient came to the practice as an adult after having lost his two central incisors as a child in a very unfortunate trampoline accident. Left with a substantial defect where the central incisors once were, the feasibility of placing implants as he presented was impossible. Working alongside Dr. Mandelaris and Dr. Iwei Huang, Dr. Vence devised a plan to allow the patient to restore his smile without resorting to a long-span bridge at a very young age. Recognizing the challenges of restoring his smile predictably and with an optimal esthetic and functional result, the doctors pooled their expertise to come up with a creative and optimal solution.

Fighting jaw discrepancies, crowding issues, and bone defects, the doctors opted for “Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy”, a sophisticated technique not widely practiced. Dr. Vence and Dr. Mandelaris both have co-authored a book on this process, establishing themselves as experts in this niche field. Through meticulous planning and ex*****on, the interdisciplinary team worked to maneuver the lateral incisors into the central position while dragging and reshaping the bone in their wake, creating a supportive environment for implants. In the wake of trauma , compromise, and biologic limitations, Dr. Vence was able to provide the patient with a finished product that they were thrilled to show off.

Last week, Dr. Vence had the privilege of participating in the prestigious International Interdisciplinary Dental Conference (IIDC) held in the picturesque alpine town of Schruns, Austria. This gathering of dentists by invitation only, renowned in the dental community, brought together prominent dentists from both sides of the Atlantic—20 from the United States and 30 from Europe. While attendance is certainly esteemed, membership within the group comes with its own set of criteria. Prospective members are required to possess expertise in both the dental education sphere and proficiency in skiing. Moreover, when called upon to present, members are expected to contribute their insights without financial compensation, thereby granting the group access to a wealth of talent without incurring additional expenses.

The conference, set against the breathtaking backdrop in Schruns Silvretta Montafon snow-capped peaks, was a fusion of intellectual discourse and recreational pursuits. Attendees were treated to a lineup of distinguished keynote speakers who delved into cutting-edge topics, leaving ample time to indulge in “discussion groups” during the exhilarating experience of skiing the surrounding slopes.

At the heart of the IIDC lies a commitment to fostering collaboration and sharing insights across borders. Over six enlightening days, experts engaged in spirited discussions on a wide range of subjects, from advancements in surgical techniques to innovative approaches in regenerative periodontal and implant surgery. The future of personalized dentistry was also presented to the group. Of particular fascination to Dr. Vence was an interdisciplinary team from the Czech Republic who captivated the interest of many with their presentation on the topic of autotransplantation of teeth in adults. This convergence of minds served as a nexus for exchanging research findings, clinical experiences, and best practices, enriching the collective knowledge base of the dental profession.

As Dr. Vence reflected on his time at the conference, he found himself invigorated by the camaraderie and intellectual stimulation shared among dentistry's foremost practitioners. The IIDC, with its blend of scholarly discourse and outdoor adventure, not only provided a platform for professional growth but also fostered lasting connections across continents.
