Come One - Come All - to a great day of Recovery

When I was Executive Director of the North Carolina Mental Health Consumers’ Organization and served on the NAMI NC board, I saw several tragic cases where people struggling with severe depression were encouraged to rely on prayer rather than professional treatment. When their suffering didn’t improve, some concluded that even God had abandoned them. A few of those individuals later died by su***de.

That’s why I believe strongly that mental illness must be treated as a health condition requiring professional care. Spiritual support may comfort some people, but prayer should never be presented as a substitute for real mental health treatment.

It’s concerning that faith communities are often the first place people turn for mental health problems. While some clergy try to be supportive, many faith traditions have historically framed mental illness as a spiritual issue, a lack of faith, or even divine judgment. That kind of framing can delay people from seeking the professional help they actually need.

At Mental Health Advocacy Inc., we encourage people to seek evidence-based care from qualified mental health professionals rather than relying on religious explanations for psychological conditions. Mental illness is a human health issue, not a spiritual failing.

Prayer may comfort some people emotionally, but prayer is not a treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, or other mental health conditions. Those require real human support, professional care, and evidence-based approaches.

We also push back against narratives that suggest parents have no responsibility in their children’s mental health struggles. Ignoring the impact of trauma, neglect, or abuse can silence survivors and add another layer of shame to experiences that already carry too much of it.

We’ve now shared ICE protest videos from rallies held in all 50 states across our Mental Health Advocacy Inc. state pages.

Showing up matters. Speaking out matters.

But it’s just as important to take the next step.

Contact your state legislators and let them know:

Do not fund ICE.

Policy changes don’t happen from protests alone — they happen when elected officials hear directly from the people they represent.

Call. Email. Write.

Let them know where you stand.

This beautiful illustration truly captures the heart of generational change! You can almost feel the gentle evening breeze as this wise woman stands, her eyes sparkling with a mix of nostalgia and wonder. She's remembering a time when the ultimate childhood plea wasn't for the newest gadget, but for just "five more minutes" of twilight play—the sound of laughter echoing down the street, the thrill of one last game before the streetlights glowed.

It's a poignant contrast to the quiet glow of screens that often illuminate young faces today. Both eras hold their unique magic, but there's an undeniable charm in those simpler, outdoor moments. What simple joy do you remember begging for "just five more minutes" of as a child? Share your below! 👇 Let's celebrate the beautiful differences across generations.
