In October, the DART Prevention Coalition of Ocean County (DART) distributed 186 Safe Medication Disposal Kits to community members. These kits offer individuals a safe way to dispose of unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications. Additionally, over 600 Safe Medication Disposal Kits have been distributed so far this year!

Safe Medication Disposal Kits help prevent medication misuse, such as taking unused or expired medications, mixing up medications, taking medication in a manner or dose other than prescribed, or even taking someone else’s prescriptions. By providing Ocean County residents with a way to dispose of their expired or unused medications, our Prevention Team is helping reduce substance use and build healthier communities.

As Substance Use Prevention Month continues, we are raising awareness for the risks associated with energy drink consumption in children and adolescents.

Energy drinks have gained popularity over the years, with new brands and seasonal flavors being introduced all the time. Despite their popularity, energy drinks are not recommended as part of a healthy diet and pose physical and mental health risks for children and adolescents.

Learn more about the effects of energy drinks on youth health and strategies to help your child make healthier beverage choices at https://www.rwjbh.org/blog/2025/october/boost-or-burnout-are-energy-drinks-safe-for-yout/

Discussing your substance use with your provider is one strategy for preventing or identifying substance use disorder. These conversations are crucial for helping your provider understand your regular habits and stressors, while creating space for your provider to offer alternative, healthier coping mechanisms and, when appropriate, refer you to recovery support services.

Conversations about substance use are important to your overall health and well-being. That's why our Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) team is helping RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group providers and staff screen patients for substance use and have open, honest conversations using a patient-first, evidence-based approach.

The SBIRT team recently trained the staff at RWJBarnabas Health's Primary and Specialty Care at Clark in the SBIRT model, providing staff with the skills and tools to better discuss substance use and support services with their patients. Together, we're tackling addiction and reducing stigma!
