Shame does not just follow an HIV diagnosis for many Black people. It becomes the diagnosis. When you are Black, already navigating mental health stigma, and then receive a life-altering medical disclosure, the weight of who you believe you now are can be more disabling than the virus itself. This is the reality I sit with regularly in my work at Emergent Counseling and Consulting here in South Florida.
If you are reading this and you recognize yourself in those words, this post is for you. I want to name what is actually happening inside the shame cycle, explain why it is so difficult to break, and offer a real path toward healing.
