It is that time of year when the leaves begin to change colors, the air feels cooler, and stores stock up on scary and spooky decor and snacks. For many, this is the best holiday. However, the presence of anxiety can make Halloween feel challenging and worrisome. Children are especially prone to anx...

Today I led a workshop for black employees centered on taking a step back to self-preserve.

Among all the action taking place, there is an excitement and a call to do it right NOW. Then, there may be feelings of selfishness for stepping back to take care of yourself.
This is a marathon, not a sprint.
In self-preserving, you prepare yourself to take sustainable action in this movement.

Get in that grind, but also take moments to do things that bring you joy.
Sleep.
Nourish your body.
Move your body.
Be in community.
Take breaks.

I honestly feel humbled by this work.
To stand in solidarity, is donating 100% of the proceeds from this workshop to the .

Let’s keep it going.

As I was connecting with friends and family today and discussing the painful realities of being black in America, I realized how sacred these spaces are. To vent, to be able to express the pain, to feel held and supported...even if for a short time during your week or day.

This month I am offering a FREE mental health support group for black, indigenous and people of color to come together. It is especially important right now that we have safe spaces and community to express our internal experiences and continue to lift each other up.

Today we met with AMAZING CSA team to talk about Emotional Labor at work. What is that?

Emotional Labor is the process of managing our own feelings and expressions to fulfill the emotional requirements of a job. When we are in a position of service, we often have to put our own feelings, reactions and opinions aside to be able to listen to and meet the needs of our client or customer.

Emotional Labor can help us be successful at our work, but may also leave us feeling 'spent' or 'empty.' Research shows that being unable to attend to our emotional experience can affect how we perceive others, our communication, and our health. Our bodies understand unprocessed emotions as stress, and this can throw off our sleep, appetite, mood, ability to focus and experience joy.

How do you 'fill up our own cup'?

Practicing mindfulness, self-compassion and carving out time for restorative activities.

Let’s talk about how to implement these practices into your everyday life.

After leading a mindfulness workshop this week for , I’ve been reflecting on how I practice in my daily life.

My dear friend reminded me that 50% of our day is spent on autopilot! That’s great for brushing our teeth or doing mundane things. We can’t be present for every moment, but do I really want to be unaware, distracted, living in the past or future for 50% of my life?!

Mindfulness means being aware of what is happening right NOW. In your body, in your mind, in your surroundings.

Especially with the current crisis, it’s easy to get lost in an imagined future and ruminate on what will happen. But is that serving us?

Give yourself permission to pause and be aware. It can be little things. The taste of your breakfast, the comfort of a blanket as you cuddle up on the couch, the breeze on your walk, the sound of your friends laugh over zoom, the color of the trees.

Let’s not look back on this time and realize we spent the whole time worrying, instead of cherishing the moments we have.

How are you practicing?

When we are all witnessing global pain and suffering, it is easy to start ranking our suffering.

I’ve caught myself thinking that I ‘should be grateful’ because of my privileges.

Yes, practicing gratitude and acknowledging our privilege is important. But when we minimize our own pain, we actually minimize our ability to show compassion for others.

There is no limit on compassion. It doesn’t run out. Research shows that when we practice self-compassion, it opens up the space to practice more compassion and kindness towards others.

Be kind to yourself. When you’re struggling, remember your feelings are valid. Stop and say:

“I am feeling....”
”I am not alone.”
“How can I practice kindness towards myself?”

Be kind to your self, so you can be of service to others. It starts with you.

I hear a lot of my clients struggling with a voice in their head telling them they need to be productive right now and make the “most of this time.”

I’m asking, “according to who?”
Our culture idealizes productivity as the highway to success.

When productivity is our guiding force, everything becomes a task to be done. If we set expectations that are unrealistic and can’t keep those promises to our self, we break our trust with our self. Cue: negative self talk.

Productivity is necessary. But I’m also wondering, what brings you meaning and what is important to YOU. What makes you feel alive?

I love a good to-do list, but I also want to take care of my health, have genuine connections, be creative and do things for pure fact that I enjoy them.

What’s your definition of success?

Consistency trumps truth every time. Our mind tells the same story over and over and OVER again. It tells the story, we listen, believe it and confirm it through our actions. It doesn’t mean that story is true.

Especially as women, we are taught to create narratives about our worthiness. “I need to be....or.....” “I am not enough unless I......” At one point that story may have served us or helped us survive a challenging time. The thing is, you have evolved and grown.
Take time to notice what your mind is telling you and ask yourself, is that story serving me?

It may be time to write a new story.

We all woke up one day in a global crisis. COVID-19 continues to spread, leaving us fearful of going outside, spending time with the people we love, or socializing in the ways we used to. We turn on the TV to hear that people are dying, the economy is crashing, and the world is still trying to figur...
