Text on the image: "Huichol face painting is a sacred art form used by religious practitioners in pe**te ceremonias, and represents the faces of the deities as seen in pe**te visions. This form of expression is only found in the ceremonial centers and is not used by the general Huichol population. The Huichols believe that the face paint allows the Creators to recognize the medicine people, so they can gain access to the metaphysical realm and obtain the powers they seek. The paint is made from the yellow root of a bush that grows in the pe**te desert, which is rubbed onto the surface of a flat rock and mixed with wáter to form a paste. A small stick the size of a toothpick is dipped into the paste and drops of the paint are meticulously applied to form the intricate designs over the course of many hours. When the ceremony concludes the next morning, the participants wash their faces, thus erasing all traces of this rarely seen art form."
