James Clear's book Atomic Habits states of the Two-Minute Rule: “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.”

He elaborates:

You’ll find that nearly any habit can be scaled down into a two-minute version:

“Read before bed each night” becomes “Read one page.”
“Do thirty minutes of yoga” becomes “Take out my yoga mat.”
“Study for class” becomes “Open my notes.”
“Fold the laundry” becomes “Fold one pair of socks.”
“Run three miles” becomes “Tie my running shoes.”

So the idea is to make your habits as easy as possible to start. Anyone can meditate for 1 minute or 2 minutes a day and then scale up! Once the habit is a regular one, it's easier to. He says "What you want is a “gateway habit” that naturally leads you down a more productive path"!

Often, we answer the question "How are you?" with an automatic, canned response. But each time we are asked is a chance to practice some in-the-moment mindfulness. Practices like the -check in can also support self-awareness and mindful approaches to life choices, large and small.

An incredibly helpful and healthy exercise in practical self-care is viewing challenging behavior from others as NOT ABOUT YOU, but instead looking at it through the lens of 🔍🔍🔍

Doing this is 👉 NOT EASY 👈 , but it does make it less about us, and more about realizing that some, if not most, difficult behaviors from our coworkers, friends or family may be rooted in some protective mechanism that isn't about making our lives harder but about attempting to take care of themselves.

💭 A thought/practice for : What situations can you anticipate this coming week where this practice might be helpful?

We've probably all heard the in-case-of-emergency instructions when we board a plane: put YOUR mask on first. This is because if you lose consciousness, you won't be able to help others. It makes perfect sense to us in that scenario...right?

This also applies elsewhere!

As a helping professional, a parent, etc. before you can help others, you have to be good yourself! In some moments, especially when there is a lot going on in life, if may feel counterintuitive, but taking care of yourself can:

1️⃣ Prevent burnout
2️⃣ Prevent vicarious trauma
3️⃣ Contribute to better outcomes with those you work with

And of course, it contributes to your internal well-being and fulfillment. So in the end, self-care is for you AND for those you work with; self-care is not selfish ✨✨✨
