Brian Gillis, a doctor of osteopathy who serves on the board of trustees for Inland, said when the hospital closes and patients need immediate care, they can go to other hospitals, but he is most worried about patients with no access to primary care. Many will be severely affected because they need ongoing tests for diseases such as colon, breast and cervical cancers. If people with high blood pressure, for instance, have no primary care and don’t get medications, they are at risk for stroke or heart attack.

Gillis is in private practice but has privileges at Inland and MaineGeneral Health in Augusta, and serves on the state Medical Board of Osteopathic Licensure. Getting operating time at area hospitals to do surgeries is difficult as they say they don’t have the space, he said.

“I had to take my patients to Lewiston,” he said. “St. Mary’s hospital gave me privileges and operation block day immediately.”

I spent 25 years participating in various departments and meetings at various levels of leadership positions. I was a volunteer and brought my skill set to our community hospital they provided the setting and I brought my skill set. We worked together to provide excellent care to our community. I could not be intimidated or fired. I was a volunteer at their facility I brought the patients that chose to be cared at their institution by me. Everyone really benefited fthe hospital did not pay my salary, my office staff or billing company malpractice, office space, the costs go on and on. They just benefited from me volunteering my skill to bring the patients that chose me and their institution. Healthcare is at a breaking point, fortunately our practice is fine we are small nimble debt free. We understand reimbursement and health care. I am one of the few left in private practice. My office manager is my wife and I have had the same staff for over 20 years.

I will volunteer our services at another hospital it will be seamless and who knows even more advantages for myself and patients. That is the good news. The hard news is that the implementation of healthcare has many levels prior authorization, hospitals that are in network etc etc. So immediately seek primary care now because in the next few weeks things are going to change very quickly and access to prescriptions and services are going to be severely impacted.

For my patients I am here to help and navigate. But don’t delay find a new Primary care provider immediately if yours is closing. DrGillis
