Hear from UCGHI Director of Global Health Education, Dr. Oladele Ogunseitan, during the upcoming webinar, "Evolving Definitions of Global Health."

This webinar explores how the concept and practice of global health are evolving in response to shifting political, environmental, and social realities. Drawing on the recent commentary “An Updated Definition of Global Health” published in Global Health Research and Policy, the panel will examine why longstanding definitions of global health require reconsideration—and how centering equity, planetary health, and action-oriented frameworks can better reflect the field today.

Panelists will discuss the proposed updated definition and the “5 Ps” framework (People, Planet, Priorities, Policies, and Practices), and reflect on the implications for education, research, policy, and practice in an increasingly interconnected world.

Panelists:
- Dr. Kathryn H. Jacobsen, University of Richmond
- Dr. Caryl Waggett, Allegheny College
- Dr. Oladele Ogunseitan, University of California, Irvine
- Dr. John Olawepo, Northeastern University
- Dr. Abram Wagner, University of Michigan
Moderator Dr. Jessica Evert, Child Family Health International (CFHI)

Farmworker communities face increasingly dire threats linked to climate change. From extreme heat, air pollution, and flood damage, to crop failures from drought and new pests, to increased exposure to pesticides, farmworkers are experiencing climate changed challenges that compound their social, political and economic vulnerabilities.

The "Farmworker Community Health Vulnerabilities and Responses Amid Climate Change" project, funded by the state of California through a UC Climate Action grant, has mapped where these multiple vectors of climate vulnerability intersect on the ground in California with a community co-designed map app called Campo-Sano. Supplementing this app with additional tools and trainings designed with and for community health promoters, they have sought to develop freely available resources for farmworkers and their advocates across California and beyond.

Hear from Dr. Matt Sparke (UC Santa Cruz) about this multi UC campus project and how they worked with 10 community based organizations across California to develop this important resource.

The Society of Family Planning’s latest report shows the steady increase in abortions across the United States in the years since Roe was overturned. Abortion bans don’t stop people from needing or getting care.

UCGHI Center for Gender and Health Justice Associate Director, Dr. Ushma Upadhyay, serves as the Co-Chair where she is working to capture the number of abortions provided in the formal health system, by state, following the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision.

The GloCal Health Fellowship is excited to congratulate 2017-2018 alumna Dr. Adriane Wynn on her recent NIH R01 award with a perfect score! Dr. Wynn’s five-year award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) will evaluate the impact of antenatal screening and treatment for asymptomatic Chlamydia trachomatis infection to prevent preterm birth in Botswana. Preterm birth is the leading cause of infant mortality worldwide as well as the most important predictor of long-term morbidity. Given that at least 40% of preterm births may be caused by infection, this research is especially critical. Lessons learned will also inform efforts to address the high rates of preterm birth and gaps in sexually transmitted infection screening that persist in the U.S.

Dr. Wynn’s R01 research builds well on the project she did as a GloCal fellow, assessing the costs and benefits of testing and treating HIV-infected pregnant women for sexually transmitted infections in Southern Africa. Since 2020, Dr. Wynn has been an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego. She is also a Research Associate with the Botswana Harvard Health Partnership and Botswana Sexual and Reproductive Health Initiative. Additionally in 2020, she received a K01 award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), which allowed her to study the long-term population impact of harmful alcohol use on HIV transmission and mortality in Uganda. We celebrate GloCal alumna Dr. Wynn’s many achievements!
