🍱 Ekiben: The Art of the Train Bento

In Japan, the meal is just as important as the destination.
Short for *ekiu-uri-bento* (station-sold lunchbox), Ekiben has been a Shinkansen tradition since the first trains rolled out in the late 1800s. These aren’t your average takeout boxes; they are curated showcases of regional pride, featuring local ingredients and flavors unique to the station where you bought them.

From Kyoto’s refined seasonal vegetables to Yokohama’s famous *shumai* (dumplings), opening an Ekiben is like unpacking a map of Japan’s culinary landscape. It’s the ultimate way to dine while the world speeds by at 300 km/hour.

🍙 The Shinkansen Staple: 7-Eleven Onigiri

The perfect Kyoto-to-Yokohama breakfast.

The real magic is in the 1970s-engineered "pull-tab" packaging, which keeps the seaweed perfectly crisp until the moment you peel it. It’s the modern evolution of the portable rice balls samurai carried for centuries reliable, high-quality, and the ultimate fuel for a 300 km/h commute.

🛍️ Depachika: The Underground Food Cathedrals

Just steps away from the hustle of Nishiki Market lies one of Japan’s best-kept secrets: the "Depachika."

Located in the basements of Kyoto’s grand department stores, these sprawling food halls are a sensory overload. The name comes from depato (department store) and chika (basement), and they have been a staple of Japanese urban life since the early 20th century. While the market above is traditional and rustic, the Depachika is a curated gallery of perfection from $100 gift fruits to artisan bento boxes and world-class French pastries.

It’s the ultimate showcase of Japan’s gift-giving culture and seasonal obsession. Whether you’re grabbing a gourmet snack for the train or a beautifully wrapped box of Kyoto sweets, it’s a masterclass in presentation and variety.

🍳 Kyoto-Style Okonomiyaki: The Pre-Inari Power Meal

Before heading to Fushimi Inari for a late-night hike through the gates, you need a good meal.

While Osaka is the famous home of Okonomiyaki, Kyoto puts its own refined spin on this "Japanese savory pancake." It’s the ultimate comfort food grilled on a flat top and layered with cabbage, pork, seafood, etc and that signature tangy sauce with mayonnaise.

Fuelling up with a hot griddle cake is the perfect tradition before navigating the thousands of torii gates under the moonlight to avoid the daytime crowds.

🍣 Kura Sushi: The High-Tech "Kaiten" Experience

If you want to see the future of dining, you head to the conveyor belt.

Kura Sushi is a staple of modern Japanese food culture, specializing in Kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt sushi). This concept first exploded in the 1950s as a way to make high-quality fish affordable and efficient for the masses. At Kura, they’ve perfected the "revolving" art with their patented "Mr. Fresh" dome lids that keep every plate pristine as it zips around the restaurant.

It’s part meal, part arcade where you order via tablet, watch your sushi arrive on a high-speed "express lane," and even win prizes (Gachapon) by recycling your finished plates into the table slot. It’s the ultimate intersection of Japan’s love for fresh seafood and cutting-edge automation.

🍡 1,000-Year-Old Mochi: Ichimonjiya Wasuke

Just a short walk from the Golden Pavilion, we found ourselves in the middle of a culinary rivalry that has lasted for centuries.

Located right across from each other outside Imamiya Shrine are two legendary shops: Ichimonjiya Wasuke (founded in the year 1000!) and Kazariya (founded in 1637). Both serve Aburi Mochi small pieces of pounded rice skewered on bamboo, grilled over charcoal, and dipped in a sweet, toasted miso glaze. For over a millennium, these snacks have been sold to pilgrims as a way to ward off evil and sickness.

We tried both "for science," but Ichimonjiya Wasuke (or "Ichiwa") took the win for us. There’s something incredible about eating a recipe that hasn’t changed since the Heian period, served by the 25th generation of the same family. It’s not just a snack; it’s a literal bite of Japanese history.

🍣 Temarizushi: The Elegant "Geisha Sushi"

Ever wondered why some sushi in Kyoto is shaped like delicate, bite-sized ornaments?
Meet Temarizushi.

Named after Temari, the traditional Japanese hand-embroidered thread balls, this colorful style of sushi was specifically created for Kyoto’s Geiko (Geisha) and Maiko (apprentices). Because of their elaborate makeup and expensive kimonos, eating large rolls or standard nigiri was nearly impossible without a mess. These tiny, perfectly round spheres were designed to be popped into the mouth in one single, graceful bite keeping their lipstick perfectly intact.

It’s a beautiful example of how Kyoto’s food culture has always been shaped by the arts and the refined lifestyle of the Gion district.

🍜 Gion’s: Chicken Paitan (ramen) in the Heart of Kyoto

Hidden at the end of a narrow corridor in Higashiyama, this spot proves that Kyoto’s food scene is as much about hidden depths as it is about grand temples.
While many associate ramen with heavy pork broths, Kyoto has a long-standing love affair with *Chicken Paitan a creamy, soul-warming soup made by simmering chicken bones until they reach a velvety, almost buttery consistency. Paired with a perfectly marinated Ajitama (flavored egg) with a jammy gold yolk, it’s a masterclass in the Japanese pursuit of Umami.

Dining here in the historic Gion district adds another layer to the meal. You’re slurping noodles in a neighborhood that has preserved its Edo-period charm for centuries, where the contrast between the sleek, modern bowl of ramen and the ancient wooden machiya houses outside is purely magical.

🍵 Uji: The Emerald Heart of Matcha

Walking through Uji feels like stepping into a vibrant green dream, especially when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom along the Uji River.

Known globally as the birthplace of Japanese tea culture, Uji’s history with matcha dates back to the 12th century. It was here that monks first cultivated tea leaves of such high quality they became the gold standard for the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Today, that legacy lives on in everything from whisked ceremonial tea to creamy matcha soft serve and delicate sakura-mochi.

During spring, the riverside transforms. You can enjoy seasonal cherry blossom-flavored treats while sitting under a canopy of pink petals a sensory experience where ancient tea traditions meet the fleeting beauty of the sakura season.

🍣 Hidden Gem: Casual Sushi Near Kyoto Station

Stepping off the Shinkansen and into a local sushi spot is the ultimate Kyoto welcome.

While Kyoto is famous for Kyo-ryori (traditional haute cuisine), the casual lunch scene near the station offers a different kind of perfection. These spots serve as a masterclass in efficiency and freshness, often featuring local specialties like Sabazushi (pickled mackerel sushi) a dish with roots dating back centuries when fresh fish had to be preserved for the long journey from the coast to the ancient capital.

It’s a beautiful balance of high-speed modern travel and slow-cured tradition all served up in a relaxed atmosphere before you head out to explore the temples.
