Tiba Foundation Champions of the Boda Girls

Tiba Foundation Champions of the Boda Girls Tiba partners with local Kenyan organizations to improve access to health, education & women's empowerment. Tiba champions Matibabu's Boda Girls program.

We partner with local Kenyan health care organizations and provide funding, medical volunteers, and strategic guidance. Boda Girls trains women as motorcycle taxi drivers in rural areas to drive community health, education, and financial empowerment for women. Together, we are empowering and saving lives, and transforming the health care landscape for thousands of locals in rural Kenya.

As Disability Pride Month comes to a close, we hold onto this truth: disability is not a limitation—exclusion is.

At Tiba Foundation, we are proud to support Matibabu Foundation’s disability inclusion efforts in rural Kenya. From home visits and medications to mobility aids and income opportunities, these programs are changing lives—and reshaping mindsets.

Disability Pride Month is more than a celebration. It’s a call to continue building systems where everyone can belong, contribute, and thrive.

Let’s keep going.

Still energized from the launch of our newest Boda Girls site — this time with our incredible partners at MED25 Hospital in Homa Bay County.

This moment represents more than a delivery of motorcycles. It’s a delivery of health access — powered by bold women who are trained to safely transport girls and women to life-saving services like prenatal care, cancer screenings, immunizations, and family planning.

We’re especially grateful for the leadership of Diane Dodge, Executive Director of Tiba Foundation, and Nancy Akeyo, our dedicated Boda Girls Country Advisor. Their unwavering belief in the power of local women is the reason this program continues to grow and thrive.

From the warehouse to the community, from training sessions to real impact — Boda Girls are on the move. And thanks to MED25, the future of health access in Homa Bay just got a whole lot brighter.

We're celebrating a major milestone: MED25 is now the first official Boda Girls site in Homa Bay County! 🎉

The Boda Girls are more than drivers. They are trained health advocates who safely transport girls and women to essential services like prenatal care, cervical cancer screenings, and vaccinations — free of charge.

In addition to transportation, they’re also leading important menstrual health education in their communities, helping to dispel myths and empower women and girls with accurate information and resources to manage their health with dignity.

In rural Kenya, where a lack of transport or education can prevent someone from getting the care they need, Boda Girls are transforming barriers into bridges.

Congratulations to our partners at MED25 — and to the incredible women powering this work forward. 💖🏍️

Meet another incredible Lucy. She’s a Boda Girl, a trained motorbike driver—and she also lives with a disability.

In rural Kenya, very few women drive boda bodas. Even fewer live with disabilities. But that didn’t stop Lucy from joining the Boda Girls program and learning to give free, safe rides to girls in her community.

Now, Lucy is a role model on the road—redefining what’s possible and showing others that disability does not mean invisibility. Her work provides access to clinics and schools for girls who might otherwise walk for miles.

This is what Disability Pride Month is all about: representation, independence, and leading with purpose.

Disability Pride Month is about lifting up voices and celebrating progress. This is Lucy’s story.

Lucy contracted polio at age four. She regained partial mobility through therapy, but her right leg remained affected. As an adult, she was unable to work, and her five children had to care for her—giving up school in the process.

Then she received a hand-pedaled tricycle through Matibabu Foundation’s Mobility Program, in partnership with the Association of Persons with Disabilities in Kenya (APDK). That simple device changed everything.

Lucy now tends her crops, rides to the market, and runs one of the most successful produce stands in her town. Her children are back in school. Her independence has transformed her life—and theirs.

Mobility creates opportunity. This month, we celebrate that.

July is Disability Pride Month—a time to celebrate the value, visibility, and rights of people with disabilities around the world.

In rural Kenya, living with a disability has often meant facing deep stigma and exclusion. But through our partnership with Matibabu Foundation, we’re helping to change that. Today, more than 200 families receive ongoing support: home-based care, medicine, mobility aids, livelihood training, and—most importantly—dignity.

At Tiba Foundation, we believe that equitable health care must be inclusive. This month, and every month, we honor the people and programs working to ensure no one is left behind.

For years, cervical cancer has claimed more lives than breast cancer in Kenya—yet it's largely preventable with the HPV vaccine.

That’s why we at Tiba Foundation are heartened to see the Catholic Church in Kenya now championing HPV vaccination as a moral and medical imperative. When trusted community leaders advocate for prevention, more girls and women can access life-saving care.

Together, we can end cervical cancer deaths in Kenya. 💉💛

🎉 Happy Birthday to our fearless leader, Diane Dodge! 🎉 Diane Dodge

Today we celebrate the heart, soul, and visionary behind so much of Tiba’s impact.

Since joining Tiba in 2019, Diane has championed a bold vision: that health, education, and gender equity in rural Kenya must be community-owned and determined. From launching the Boda Girls and the Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign to supporting kitchen gardens and surgical camps, Diane leads with deep purpose and unwavering compassion.

Her legacy of transformation spans continents and decades—but what makes Diane truly remarkable is how she shows up every day: with humility, with strength, and with boundless belief in the power of women and communities to shape their own futures.

We’re endlessly grateful for your leadership, your heart, and your laughter.

Happy Birthday, Diane. The world is brighter—and more just—because of you.

Rhiana Menen, Tiba's VP and Boda Girls Champion, volunteered at Matibabu for a week working on our new breast and cervical cancer programs with long-term volunteer Terry Dunn. Afterward, she had a few days with her family in Amboseli - 9 lions on day one! Amboseli has a fantastic landscape at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, and it was both fun and relaxing, even with her teen boys.

Industry and animal protection organizations have recognized Gamewatchers for their leadership in conservation, respect for animals, and support for local communities. And we like them for their luxurious tents and personal attention to guests! Do you think this sounds like a commercial? It kind of is. We chose to recommend them for their values, and they value us by providing Tiba with a complimentary 10-day safari for us to auction at our annual galas—we appreciate that, too!

Last month, volunteers Rhiana, Ryan, Lesa, Terry, Hallie, Ingrid, Emmett, and Wyatt traveled to Kenya for a friendly exchange with our partners at Matibabu.

From sharing ideas and skills to connecting with local students, Boda Girls, and partner organizations, each moment was filled with learning, laughter, and purpose.

We’re so grateful for the time, energy, and heart these volunteers brought to the community. 💛
